Despite the song’s appearance relatively late in the Beatles’ discography, it was one of the first songs that Paul McCartney wrote, at the age of 16. When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone. This version of When I’m Sixty-Four is arranged as a duet for two Trombones. The full YouTube performance above is the Clarinet version of this duet.Musicians at an intermediate level will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performance. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills and expressive playing. Written for the pupils of the chamber music course at the Conservatoire of Barcelona (Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona). The work evokes the several steps experienced in the process of self-reflecting, where one looks inward and examines his own emotional responses and behaviours to a given input, idea, decision, thought, etc.The scoring challenges both performers to interact to each other and negotiate the musical material; sometimes by passing the main thematic ideas on to each other, other times by build it together and other times to influence and alter each other. All of it so both sound sources melt into one single musical discourse which evolves and transforms every so often, as if mimicking the multiple decisions and thoughts one can take during a self-reflecting process.The motivation behind the composition of this work lies in the need to offer a repertoire with the demands and challenges present in the repertoire used in exam boards and conservatories but with a modern use of harmony and melody such as the one we can hear on television or in the cinema. So the harmonic language, the form, the compositional techniques and the use of rhythm, melody and articulation in this work presents a blend a current style present in American film music, television, musicals, Jazz or minimalism (with influences from composers such as Ludovico Einaudi, Yann Tiersen, John Williams, Michael Nyman, or Hans Zimmer) with the type of writing, thematic treatment, piano technique and musical form found in the classical chamber music repertoire. Approximate duration: 3 mins.Written in Barcelona on April 2023.

It provides seven pieces which are musically satisfying and fun to play without demanding more than basic technical ability and theoretical knowledge and the first five notes learned on the instrument. Pitches used: Bb C D Eb F. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole-note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter note), quavers (eighth-notes). Quavers (eighth-notes) appear only in groups of 2 or 4. Articulations/signs used: staccato, accent, slur, tie, repeat, 1st and 2nd time endings. Each piece may be performed as a Solo (use Part 1), Duet or 2-part Ensemble.
