Score. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #222039. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.612844). John Baptist Loeillet, a Flemish Baroque composer, wrote six sonatas for flute and basso continuo in his Op. 5 No. 2. This work is widely considered to be some of his most significant compositions, and they are still performed today.The sonatas are divided into three movements each, with two slow movements and one faster one. The flute part is very demanding, as Loeillet often wrote in the high register, and the accompanying basso continuo part provides a solid foundation for the piece. The music has an emotional intensity that was characteristic of the Baroque era, and it features various ornamentations, like trills and mordents. The influence of Corelli can be heard in the contrapuntal textures, and the melodic lines are often based on the scales and modes of the period.Loeillet's Op. 5 No. 2 is a beautiful and captivating work, and its timelessness is a testament to its quality. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792437). Beethoven’s two duos were originally written for Clarinet and Cello, but are often performed with Bassoon. They were published without an opus and were probably intended as gifts for friends or to be performed at a private chamber music soireé. Mr. Sauer’s arrangements are delightful to play. Duos 1 & 2 have three movements; the first in the traditional Sonata form, the second a slow movement Larghetto and third movement a zippy Rondo. Duo 3 begins with a first movement Allegro and the second movement is an Aria with Variations, having a quick gigue-like Allegro tacked on to the end.These duos may be performed by Tenor and Bass Trombone or 2 Tenors, with the 2nd part needing an f-attachment to reach down for some D’s and C’s. The first parts are all in Tenor clef and these threee works are of moderate difficulty.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1297340). Here is what arranger David Mathie writes about the 5 Duos by Rossini.Gioachino Rossini was an Italian composer, born in 1792 and died in 1868. He was known primarily for his thirty-nine operas, although he did compose some chamber pieces and a few orchestral works. His 5 Duos for 2 Horns in E♠were probably written in 1806 when Rossini was fourteen and living in Bologna, although they weren’t published until 1861. While it may seem unusual for a fourteen-year-old to be composing, by then Rossini had already written his String Sonatas at the age of twelve, and those works are still performed today. An explanation for why Rossini would write a set of duets for horn may be that his father was a professional trumpet player, and taught his son Gioachino to play the horn at a very young age.These five pieces were written for the natural (valveless) horns of the time, and like the horn writing of Mozart some very technical passages can be found in the lower part, especially in duets four and five. We can also hear the future opera composer’s arias in number three. The duos will work quite well on recitals and also for casual duet playing. Because trombonists can never have enough practice in clefs, I have transcribed the duets into three versions each using bass, tenor and alto clefs.The 5 Duos in 3 Clefs by Rossini arranged by David Mathie are perfect studies for any aged performer to begin learning Tenor and Alto Clefs. The duet format allows the teacher to play alongside the student, which is always so valuable for learning. They are of moderate difficulty making them well-suited for the Clef Novice to begin adding these necessary tools to their technique.
