Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Joy to the World is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.Joy to the World is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Published by Slide Ride (A0.784313).  If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!  The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!  I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.  As with those exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like. • Choose a tempo • Choose a dynamic. • Choose an articulation/style.  One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.  Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping 5 lines to play the same set in a new key.  If you want an additional challenge in terms of range, play them in different octaves or change the clef and key signature to expand the set. For example, if you play the F Major example in Tenor Clef, change the key signature to C Major and you have a version that is based an octave higher than the C Major version as written later.  Additionally, you can change the Key. Play them in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.  The variations are endless!  All Donut Etudes with the same version number are compatible so you can play them in mixed duets with one person on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2.  Enjoy!

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792280). The Four Duets, BWV 802-805 are part of a larger collection, the Clavier-übung III sometimes called the German Organ Mass. They were first published in 1739, mostly likely intended to be performed on the organ, as they have a range from C2 to C6; playable on almost any organ from that era. However, they could have been performed on any keyboard of the time. Musically they are more complex than the Two Part Inventions, and their purpose was most likely to take two-part counterpoint to the max. • Fugue 1 is a double fugue in E minor • Fugue 2 is a fugue in F major written as a da capo aria (ABA) • Fugue 3 in G major is light and dance-like • Fugue 4 in A minor is a fugue in strict counterpoint Ralph Sauer has once again done an extraordinary job of finding great music for our instrument and transcribing it in the most beautiful way possible. Appropriate for advanced performers. Each player has their own part as well as a study score. The 2nd part may be performed on a tenor with f-attachment or a bass trombone.
