The Easter Bonnet Bop is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for two Trombones. The Easter Bonnet Bop is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The origins of the word Bop lie in the scat language of the ‘40s; Bop quickly became associated with the fast Bebop jazz of the period as musicians vocalised the offbeat rhythms of their angular melodies. Later in the ‘50s when Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll first appeared, Bop was used to describe both the dance moves and the dance venues themselves. The Easter Bonnet Bop is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, The Easter Bonnet Bop is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. The music was a marriage of European March and African-American syncopation and was a forerunner of Ragtime. The Candy Cakewalk is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. The playing-time is around one and a half minutes, but can be lengthened by adding repeats at the performer’s discretion. March of the Three Kings for Trombone Duet arranged at the Advanced Intermediate level.The Crusades, those religious expeditions to rescue the holy places in Palestine from the Muslims, created an enormous interest in both faith and fighting in the Middle Ages. French peasants from Provence in the 13th century, when the tune for this March of the Kings was being sung and danced to, must have endowed the Three Kings of the Christmas story with all the virtues and appearance of their own folk heroes nearer at hand. These were the French dukes, clad in gleaming armor, carrying brilliant banners and bejeweled shields, who fought for the Pope far more willingly than they would have for the lives of their own serfs. Hence the martial references in this text, sung to a tune that is perhaps even older than the verses. Georges Bizet, composer of the opera Carmen, used the same tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlesienne (The Woman from Aries). The March of the Three Kings has been arranged in the trombone friendly key of c minor at the advanced intermediate level.Performance time: approx. 2 minutes.

The Tulip Ch’Boogie is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. Boogie originally referred to the piano style found in Southern State bars where the driving swung bass-line, often double in octaves, cut through the noise. These bass-line patterns were adapted by Big Bands in the ‘30s, and later by Jump bands like that of Louis Jordan. Later still Boogie was quickly incorporated into Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll. The Tulip Ch’Boogie is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals.
