This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Trumpet.For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations. Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Odessa Bulgar is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Odessa Bulgar is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The Huapango is a traditional Mexican style of music and dance, often mixing triple and duple metres. It is played on violin, accordion, and local 5-string variants of the guitar such as the vihuela, huapanguera and jarana. The Huapango rhythm famously inspired the song America in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The mixed metres, alternating between 6/8 and 3/4, will present a rhythmic challenge, while following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the dance style of the Huapango. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Clarinet. Jewish Wedding bands, prominent in early twentieth century New York, were well placed to take advantage of the phonograph recording revolution. Accordingly, we are fortunate to have a rich record of the musical style of the time. Silver Wedding first appeared in a 1915 recording by Abe Elenkrig’s Orchestra. Elenkrig was born in Ukraine, which may point to the origins of the tune. Silver Wedding is in a Bulgar style, a happy piece designed to escort the newly-weds from the ceremony to the feast. Silver Wedding is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a short introduction and coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Silver Wedding is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above.
