This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Trumpet.For many traditional Klezmer tunes, the first clues of their existence comes from bands making discs at the dawn of the recording era. In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations. Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is in three sections; overall the tune is played twice with a coda and with constant variations in the accompaniment. Odessa Bulgar is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Odessa Bulgar is perfect for weddings, celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Daffodil Doo-Wop is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets, each written in a different Rock’n’Roll style. Doo-wop reached the height of its popularity in the early ‘60s but its origins were in the African-American vocal harmony groups in East Coast cities in the ‘40s. Doo-Wop was a major influence on the soul and pop music that followed it, with groups such as the Drifters, the Four Seasons and even the Beach Boys adopting the vocal harmonies. This version is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Clarinet.Bublitschki was written in 1922 by Yakov Jadow. The title means pretzels in Russian and was inspired by the pretzel sellers by the railway station in Odessa. Jadow observed that the street-vendors were poverty-stricken and wrote the song as a lament.
