Salsa de Shibby is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Oboes.This duet is based on the style of Salsa. The name Salsa was first used in 1960s New York to describe the popular and commercial dance music made by Latin emigrés in the city. Most of the musical and structural ideas came straight from Cuban Son Montuno, but the lack of one single traditional root has allowed musicians from different Latin American countries to bring their own flavours to the music. Given the tensions between the US and Cuba, there have been accusations of cultural appropriation and Cubans dislike the word Salsa, but there is no denying the music’s worldwide appeal. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Salsa de Shibby has a performance time of just over two and a half minutes. Merengue Tipico bands maintain the traditional instrumentation of the double-headed tambora drum, güira, accordion and vocal, while urban bands in the North American diaspora often add saxophone, bass and other percussion. The Merengue dance became hugely popular in the 1950s and new forms continue to draw audiences around the world.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Joropo de Justina is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Oboes.This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Joropo which is the national and traditional music of Venezuela. The music and its accompanying dance comes from the central plains area and is also found over the border in parts of Colombia. The basic pulse of the Joropo is 3, but this is overlaid with complex cross-rhythms. The main instrument is the harp, along with cuatro and maracas as the only percussion instrument. In the modern era other instruments may join the ensemble, especially bass. This arrangement represents the song style of Joropo, with the vocal alternating with instrumental breaks.If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The many cross rhythms will provide a rhythmic challenge and there is little time to catch breath; following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. The Chocolate Chalypso is a fun and original duet written by David McKeown for two Oboes. Chocolate Chalypso is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. In the late ‘50s just a handful of national TV shows in the US had a huge influence on the music and dance crazes of the time. Artists and dances came and went with dizzying speed. Chalypso was a short-lived craze in 1958 that combined the music of the new Rock’n’Roll with much-simplified steps borrowed from Cha Cha and Calypso; and no sooner had it caught on than it was itself supplanted by The Twist. Chocolate Chalypso is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, Chocolate Chalypso is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal.
