David McKeown #4896917. Published by David McKeown (A0.587779). The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Violin and Viola Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. The linked youtube performance is the Alto Saxophone version of this duet and the repeats are omitted for brevity.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The overall performance time is around four minutes.Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing, syncopated rhythms and light articulation. Published by Krista Swider (A0.1377246). Chandelier was a challenge to arrange for two instruments! Sia is such a incredible song writer and her music has many layers that contribute so much to the magic of her music. It was tricky to feature both her melodies and the driving rhythm in her percussion and bass lines. In this arrangement, the violin and viola trade the melody back and forth. The instrument playing the accompaniment part at any given point usually has double stops to fill out the harmonies along with a driving rhythm. The viola part features pizzicato as well as several treble clef sections when it sustains the chorus melody. The violin has some very high sections. To facilitate ease with reading, particularly with the double stops, this arrangement is in B minor instead of the original key. Bowings, measure numbers and rehearsal letters are provided.

I entered this piece into a Miniature contest on Composersite but never had further contact with the proctors aside from the fact that they received the piece. I continued with the piece regardless to not only write exclusively for the stringed instruments, a feat I have not done previously at that point, but also experiment with as many textures as I could in the allotted time. I wrote this piece in binary form so that I could finish it quickly and enter it into the contest the same day. In the recording age Go Down Moses was made famous by Paul Robeson and Louis Armstrong.
