Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkinâ€™s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplinâ€™s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Violin and Viola Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. Michael Haydn was a close friend of Mozart and a composer who was admired by him. When Mozart heard of Michael Haydn's plight, he quickly wrote the two delinquent duos and delivered them to the Archbishop under Haydn's name. The set of six was presented as all Haydn's, and Colloredo could not detect in them Mozart's obvious workmanship. The piece was carefully designed to complete the set by choosing two keys not already used by Haydn. A quick tempo change (notated according to Queen's recording of the piece, at quarter note equals 144) sets up the first full verse and chorus for a raucous good time with driving chords in the accompaniment and the upbeat vocal line traded off between instruments. In Queen's recording, Don't Stop Me is sung/chanted with drums emphasizing off beats in the bridge. This arrangement emulates Queen's original bridge with accented eighth notes and the sing song melody traded between violin and viola. Each instrument gets a stab at the following electric guitar riff while the other plays edgy chords as backup. It has become one of the most instantly recognisable of Mozartâ€™s melodies. It derives its title from the Turkish style marching bands that were fashionable in Vienna at the time. This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola. Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest. The duet format gives solo instrumentalists an opportunity to play music written for piano. The overall performance time is around three and a half minutes.
