Despite the song’s appearance relatively late in the Beatles’ discography, it was one of the first songs that Paul McCartney wrote, at the age of 16. When the song was finally recorded in 1966, Paul McCartney felt it was too slow and turgid. George Martin simply solved the problem by speeding up the tape and raising the pitch by one semitone. This version of When I’m Sixty-Four is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola. The full YouTube performance above is the Clarinet version of this duet.Musicians at an intermediate level will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performance. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with ensemble skills and expressive playing. There are multiple verses and choruses that champion bass, vocal, and guitar lines which are all essential and must to be played simultaneously to maintain the integrity of the music. I had to be creative and infuse the viola part with elements of the bass line along with the guitar while the violin carries the vocal line. I still found ways to trade the melody between violin and viola, and added double stops where they add to the harmonies and overall affect without being terribly difficult. Measures are numbered, parts and score are bowed, and rehearsal letters included.

Renaissance composer Orlando Lasso was an international figure compared to other composers around his time. That is the reason he had two names, Lasso (Italian) and Lassus (German). I played with this fact and explored the possibilities of solfege ‘La-sol’. Lasso's bicinia is paraphrased several times in the piece. There is a timbral cannon toward the end where second cello strictly follows the first cello's gesture. It is then dissolved to an improvisatory coda to once again reveal the very theme La-Sol.

This hymn, also known as Morning Song, is based on an old English tune and was first published in the US in Kentucky Harmony of 1816. Here it is arranged as a sprightly duet for violin and viola that is perfect for any church service as a prelude, call to worship or offeratory. With a slight change of tempo it would be suitable as prenuptial music. I arranged this tune along with another published duet, We'll Work 'til Jesus Comes, to be played the Sunday after Labor Day! Though it is modally minor, it is upbeat and joyful!

This version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Viola. Down by the Riverside was sung in African-American communities before the American Civil War but did not appear in print until included in a 1918 collection of spirituals. Several versions were recorded by gospel choirs in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and Down by the Riverside, with its lyric, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more, was adopted as an anti-war song by the ‘60s counterculture.Down by the Riverside is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Three choruses and two verses are played, with variations, in a gospel swing style.
