Charles Pickard Ware wrote down Michael Row the Boat Ashore after listening to slaves sing it as they worked on the plantations or rowed across water. The words ask Archangel Michael for help. There is a Balm in Gilead comes from both the Old and New Testaments. Unitarian Minister, George Willis Cooke wrote a song in the later 1800’s that has become a campfire mainstay. I chose to list it as Down in My Heart. It’s also known as I’ve Got the Joy, I’ve Got that Joy, Joy, Joy and Joy, Joy, Joy. This arrangement is playable on either Lever or Pedal harps. Dynamics are clearly marked.Â

Perhaps it was an anonymous Cistercian Monk, or King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656), or John Reading (1645-1692) or John Francis Wade (1711-1786). The first published version of it was in 1751 by John Francis Wade, a Scottish scholar of plainchant so he is often given credit as its composer. This arrangement has three verses of increasing difficulty; each using harmonics in the quiet sections. The dynamics are clearly marked. The melody is divided evenly between parts. O'Meara Music #5730669. Published by O'Meara Music (A0.803936). There is disagreement as to exactly when the Italian pianist, Count of Montignoso, Enrico Toselli composed his famous melody. Perhaps it was composed when he was 17 years old (1900) or perhaps it was composed in 1907 when he eloped with Archduchess Louise of Austria. Internationally, there are many titles and lyrics associated with this melody. Besides the original title of Serenata Rimpianto, it has been recorded and published with the names Regret, Come Back, Toselli’s Serenade, Nightingale Serenade, and Dreams and Memories. The sweet melody is still being recorded today.

Fifteen Arrangements of Traditional Tunes from Cornwall arranged for Lever harps tuned in Eb, Bb or F, or any pedal harp.  Guitar chords included, with duo parts for Flute or Violin.These tunes have been placed in progressive key order to create a satisfying “Cornish suite†that facilitates lever and pedal changes. All tunes were typeset to fix exactly on two facing pages to eliminate any page turns within a piece.Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minor adjustments. Only one song in this collection, #6, has any lever or pedal changes (B-flat and B-natural). Otherwise, there are only lever or pedal presets in preparation for the next song. Dynamic markings, fingerings, metronome markings, breath marks, and lever/pedal changes are provided throughout. However, the musicians should use whichever expressive markings and lever/pedal adjustments suit them, no matter what this book indicates! Due to space constraints, first and second endings were only indicated above the flute/violin part in the full score and dynamics only within the harp part; but these markings apply to both instruments. (However, all markings are indicated on the separate instrumental leaflet.) This entire book of arrangements can be played on a harp of only 26 strings (3.5 octaves), from low C to high G. Simply treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp and adjust the octaves accordingly. Ten Carols for Two Harps - this is particularly aimed at the student and teacher harpist working together, and sometimes working online together. Harp 1 is the easier part, and Harp 2 is at an intermediate level - perfect to use with a student and teacher in the build up to Christmas. Generally the students starts each piece by playing the main tune, but in most arrangements, the student switches over and accompanies or harmonises the tune with Harp 2. The book contains a variety of keys, time signatures, a couple of lever changes.
