In this case, Odessa Bulgar first appeared in a 1919 recording by Abe Schwartz’s Orchestra. Schwartz was born in Romania and emigrated to the USA around 1900, thereafter enjoying a long career in the music industry. Odessa Bulgar is a happy piece designed for dancing at celebrations. Odessa Bulgar is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. In 1918 a professor and musicologist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Abraham Zevi Idelsohn, set the tune to words adapted from Psalm 118. Hava Nagila was first performed at celebrations at the end of the Great War and quickly spread throughout the Jewish diaspora. In the fifties and sixties, performances by singers as diverse as Harry Belafonte and Bob Dylan popularised the song far beyond its original Jewish audience. Hava Nagila remains one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards today, traditionally performed at Jewish celebrations.Hava Nagila is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Idelssohn's research into the music cultures of the different Jewish communities of Jerusalem laid the foundation for the growth of a unique melding of east and west that is the Israeli musical style. · Hevenu Shalom Aleichem (We brought you peace) was first published in 1910 by the musicologist Franz Haverel, as a Turkish folk melody Sala'am Aleikum. It came to Palestine in the same year, as an advertisement for Turkish cigarettes; the tune was printed on the package. · Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well. You are also welcome to try some of my other arrangements.
