Published by Homco/Crinion (A0.1469050). Old Hundredth (Doxology) is a hymn tune from the 16th Century. It received its current name from its association with the 100th Psalm. The old melody is also sung to different lyrics and has been used in chorales and instrumental works. J.S. Bach used the melody in one of his Cantatas and Felix Mendelssohn in one of his Piano Trios. Most recently, Ralph Vaughan Williams used the old 100th psalm tune for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in a brass fanfare. This arrangement for violin & cello is a theme-and-variations type setting of the melody.

The ancient tune PASSION CHORALE which first appeared as a hymn in 1613 is presented here as a string duet arrangement (for VIOLIN and CELLO). The familiar lyrics we know as O Sacred Head, Now Wounded were added sometime around 1656. Though over 300 years old, this song continues to add inspiration and contemplation to worship services during the season of Lent and Easter. The melody is played by the VIOLIN throughout. An optional repeat is provided in case a longer musical selection is needed. All notes for both the VIOLIN and CELLO are playable in the first position making this arrangement an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. This easy arrangement for violin and cello has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.
