In this arrangement a string duo tells the same story.The title means For Elise ('Für' sounds like fear), but nobody knows who this was. It was written for a woman called Therese Malfatti. Beethoven asked her to marry him in 1810, but she refused. He gave her a private copy of this piece, which was not published until 1867.

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802578). The Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony, is a symphony composed by Ludwig vanBeethoven and completed in 1808. One of Beethoven's few works containing explicitly programmatic content (instrumental music that relates a story or portrays a scene), the symphony was first performed in the Theater an der Wien on22 December 1808 in a four-hour concert.The finale, which is in F major, is in 6/8 time. The movement is in sonata rondo form, meaning that the main themeappears in the tonic key at the beginning of the development as well as the exposition and the recapitulation. Like many classical finales, this movement emphasizes a symmetrical eight-bar theme, in this case representing the shepherds' song of thanksgiving.The coda starts quietly and gradually builds to an ecstatic culmination for the full orchestra (minus storm instruments)with the first violins playing very rapid triplet tremolo on a high F. There follows a fervent passage suggestive of prayer, marked by Beethoven pianissimo, sotto voce; most conductors slow the tempo for this passage. After a brief period of afterglow, the work ends with two emphatic F-major chords.Here is an excerpt of this magic music for Violin and Cello that can be used as a short closer or filler, under the appropriate circumstances.

Symphonie Fantastique (Fantastical Symphony: Episode in the Life of an Artist … in Five Sections) Op. 14, is a program symphony written by the French composer Hector Berlioz in 1830. It is an important piece of theearly Romantic period. The first performance was at the Paris Conservatoire on 5 December 1830. Franz Liszt made a piano transcription of the symphony in 1833 (S. 470).Leonard Bernstein described the symphony as the first musical expedition into psychedelia because of itshallucinatory and dream-like nature, and because history suggests Berlioz composed at least a portion under the influence of opium. According to Bernstein, Berlioz tells it like it is. You take a trip, you wind up screaming at your own funeral.Symphonie Fantastique is a piece of program music that tells the story of an artist gifted with a lively imagination who has poisoned himself with opium in the depths of despair because of hopeless, unrequited love.The original way in which Berlioz fused all the ingredients and elements into his music with great emotional intensity and musical brilliance makes this symphony such a masterpiece. It was truly revolutionary in that nothing like it had ever been heard before.

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802589). Má Vlast ('My Homeland' in Czech language) is a set of six symphonic poems composed between 1874 and 1879 by the Czech composer Bedrich Smetana. While it is often presented as a single work in six movements and - with the exception of Vltava - almost recorded that way, the six pieces were conceived as individual works. They had their own separate premieres between 1875 and 1880; the premiere of the complete set took place on 5 November 1882 in Zofin Palace, Prague under Adolf Chech, who had also conducted two of the individual premieres.

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802593). La donna è mobile (Woman is fickle) is the Duke of Mantua's canzone from the beginning of act 3 of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto (1851). Before the opera's first public performance (in Venice), the song was rehearsed under tight secrecy: a necessary precaution, as La donna è mobile proved to be incredibly catchy, and soon after the song's first public performance it became popular to sing among Venetian gondoliers.The tune has been used in popular culture for a long time and for many occasions and purposes. Verdiknew that he had written a very popular melody, so he provided the score to the singer at the premiere, Raffaele Mirate, only shortly before the premiere and had him swear not to sing or whistle the tuneoutside rehearsals. And indeed, people sang the tune the next day in the streets.
