The Nocturnes, Op. 9 are a set of three nocturnes written by Frédéric Chopin between 1830 and 1832, published that year, and dedicated to Madame Marie Pleyel (Belgian concert pianist). This nocturne has a rhythmic freedom that came to characterize Chopin's later work. Originally written in B flat minor.At the time of composing this nocturne (night piece), Chopin was experiencing an emotional time. He was parting from Constantia Gladkowska, a young singer, with whom he had been in love. So, it is a quiet and reflective piece - a soft, languorous melody with a kind of filigree decoration, where minor and major keys alternate.

This beautiful version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Cello.The Londonderry Air was first collected and notated in the mid-nineteenth century in County Londonderry in the North of Ireland, however, the origins of the melody remain unknown. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. There are many other settings of the Londonderry Air, with various lyrics and in musical styles from orchestral to brass band to jazz, but Danny Boy remains the best known.Londonderry Air is simply arranged in accessible keys and over a range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played twice with a key change and different accompaniment on the second verse and is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of a little over three minutes, this version of Londonderry Air is perfect for recitals and concert performance. This string duet arrangement for violin and cello adheres to Chopin's melodic line. The cello provides a gentle rocking eighth-note accompaniment to the violin melody, and the final extended cadence has just a hint of 'Blues'. The performance duration is two and a half minutes and the full score has two individual parts attached. The Nocturne No. 20 in C- sharp minor, Op. posth., Lento con gran expressione, P 1, No. 1, No. 16, KKIVa/16, is a solo piano piece composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1830 and published in 1870.Chopin dedicated this work to his older sister Ludwika Chopin, with the statement: To my sister Ludwika as an exercise before beginning the study of my second Concerto. First published 21 years after the composer's death, the piece is usually referred to as Lento con gran espressione, from its tempo marking. It is sometimes also called Reminiscence. The piece was played by Holocaust survivor Natalia Karp for the Nazi concentration camp commandant Amon Goeth, with Goeth being so impressed with the rendition that he spared Karp's life.This was also the piece played by Holocaust survivor and famed Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman (the central figure of the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist) during the last live broadcast of Polish radio on September 23, 1939 when Warsaw was besieged by the German army. Years later Szpilman also played this piece for German army officer Wilm Hosenfeld upon their first meeting, though in the corresponding film scene Szpilman plays an abridged version of Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23. Hosenfeld later helped Szpilman hide and provided food to him in the last months of the war.It's been many years I've been inspired by this music after seeing violinist Midori (at age 12) having performed this (watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw0UH1UXJVg ). Opus/Catalog Number: Op.74, No.2, B.117 Key/Tone: G Minor Movements/Sections: 1 (Andantino) Year/Date of Composition: 1838 Difficulty: Grade 4/12 (Intermediate) Obs.: The 17 Polish Songs, Op. 74 were assembled posthumously and are not in chronological order. This particular song, Wiosna [Spring], although the second song in the set, was actually the fourteenth Chopin wrote. It was composed in 1838 and first published in Berlin in 1857. It is thus contemporary with the Op. 33 mazurkas and Op. 40 polonaises. Chopin's Polish song Wiosna is set on a text by the composer's friend and Polish poet Stefan Witwicki (1801-1847). Witwicki's descriptions of blossoming flowers and animals in green pastures contrast with gloomy ruminations. The music is beautifully simple and quite melancholic. This piano piece Wiosna is in fact the piano part of the song Wiosna. Chopin arranged it for piano solo several times for his friends between 1838 and 1848.Franz Liszt also transcribed it for the second of his Chants polonais. This is an arrangement for Violin and Cello.
