Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488288). Artaria Editions AE408Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) was at one time the most famous composer in the world. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Among the authentic chamber works the duos occupy a particularly interesting place. The Six Duos for Violin & Violoncello (Benton 501-506) appeared in over twenty editions in Pleyel's lifetime, the first in 1787, and in a variety of scorings. Although their unusual instrumentation undoubtedly contributed to the popularity of the Duos, their musical qualities - evidenced by the large number of contemporary arrangements - probably played a greater role. The works abound in attractive and distinctive melodic material; Pleyel writes idiomatically for both instruments and his part-writing is varied and interesting.

Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802575). The Symphony No. 6 in D major is an early symphony written in 1761 by Joseph Haydn and the first written after Haydn had joined the Esterházy court. It is the first of three that are characterised by unusual virtuoso writing across the orchestral ensemble. It is popularly known as Le matin (Morning).Haydn wrote this, his first symphonic work for his new employer Prince Paul II Anton Esterházy, shortly after joining the court. He had signed his employment contract with him on May 1, 1761. Prince Paul gave Haydn the three times of day as a theme for composition. The minuet also contains concertante passages.Here is an extract thereof, presented as a violin solo with cello accompaniment. Enjoy!

Musical theatre on Broadway reached its heyday in the ‘30s and ‘40s with composers such as George Gershwin and Cole Porter writing regular new shows. This period coincided with the jazz and swing era; as well as countless instrumental interpretations, singers such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald brought these songs to new audiences outside the theatre. They remain popular today, providing a soundtrack for every romantic occasion, and Love aims to capture the melody, form and spirit of these timeless songs.Love is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, after the rubato preamble, the song is a classic 32 bar AABA structure. Love has a performance time of around three minutes and a half minutes. This simple arrangement adapted for violin and violoncello duet was imagined for a group of beginner students who want to start their immersion in classical music, of course with the help of a teacher. Even though the original work is for strings, this did not prevent this beautiful adaptation, where the original essence of the work was maintained, being made only an adaptation of the tonality and some adaptations in the tessitura of the instruments. This piece can be used for professional and academic recitals, didactic material and repertoire for ensemble practice as well, which does not prevent professional musicians and instructors from using it for performances of their preference.Luigi Boccherini was born in the city of Lucca, in northern Italy. He studied cello and became a virtuoso who eventually moved to Spain, where he worked with the Spanish royal family for the rest of his life. His String Quintet in E major, Op. 11, No. 5, G 275, was written in 1771 and published in 1775, and is one of his most famous works.The quintet is famous for its minuet and trio, third movement which is often played as an independent piece outside the context of the full quintet. This is notably the most famous, it is in 3/4 time, in the key of E Major modulating to A Major. This is a beautiful work, and not just the third movement, with good partial writing for all. The lovely, flowing melodies and rhythms are typical of Boccherini. The quintet is suitable for both concerts and home performances.

It was chiefly written and sung by John Lennon, who claimed it was his first serious attempt at personal song-writing. The song features a baroque style piano solo by George Martin. The tempo was too fast for him to perform it, so he played it at half tempo and layer doubled the tape speed. The resulting tinny sound gave rise to a host of copycat harpsichord solos on contemporary pop songs.This version of In My Life is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Cello. Musicians at an intermediate level will find In My Life ideal for formal and informal concert performance. Most of the duet is straightforward though the transcribed piano solo is difficult for both players; these eight bars can be skipped without affecting the overall structure of the song.
