In my studies I found there are a sad amount of compositions for only 4.3 octave marimba. With access to only a 4.3 octave marimba myself, I found it harder to find music to play than to actually learn it. As a composer I want to make a huge contribution to the extremely limited repertoire we have as marimbists. My project of 24 preludes for 4.3 octave marimba is only the very beginning of what I hope to accomplish as a composer. I hope you enjoy!

Published by Nick Baron (A0.910948). One of the most beautiful pop songs of the Nineties, if not all time, Seal's 'Kiss From A Rose' is a favourite for millions worldwide. This arrangement has been performed at concerts and weddings by it's creator, Nick Baron, in his own marimba duo, and it is now here on sale for the first time.Seal's masterpiece is poignant, elegant and soulful; these characteristics shared by the marimba with its soft attack and warm resonance make it a perfect fit.The arrangement follows the form of Seal's original but there is creativity in the marimba writing; for example the way a groove is often created between the ostinato rhythms of the two marimbas to suggest the presence of a rhythm section. Both parts are for four mallets and it is written in the key of C#. This arrangement would be an excellent addition to a conservatoire-level concert programme. Requirements: two players, four mallets each, two 4.3 octave marimbas.

These are not my best work, but they are good teaching tools that I have used a couple of times for short lessons on certain techniques for four-mallet marimba playing. Sorry. This piece was composed for percussionist Kevin Romanski, who also provided advice on some technical matters. The title refers to its initial inspiration: the contemplation of different color combinations of the notes in a C13 chord. In terms of character, it begins with a slow meditative repetition of two melodic ideas. One is played as single-handed rolls by the right-hand while the other is a slowly developing melody played by the left-hand. Because the phrases of these two ideas do not align, their interaction creates a kaleidoscopic shifting of harmonic colors. A faster middle section continues developing both the harmonic and rhythmic interaction between the two hands, but in a more active and syncopated way. After a series of dramatic outbursts, the original meditative quality returns and the piece ends quietly with a return of material from the first section.

Published by Neal Fitzpatrick Editions (A0.955426). This is Impromptu No.15 For Marimba From Twenty Impromptus For Marimba by Neal Fitzpatrick. This set of music for Marimba is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. Both being polyphonic instruments the guitar and the marimba are certainly distant cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. He also studied extensively with Sharon Isbin and Sal Salvador. Based in Connecticut, he is active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene.
