The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological form for which Oâ€™Connor says not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own familyâ€™s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the familyâ€™s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually out West during WWl nearly 300 hundred years later. Oâ€™Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style in which he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, maybe similar to what Oâ€™Connorâ€™s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, reveals music they must of encountered living in early America. This was the first recording of calypso music, pre-dating the first jazz record by five years. This arrangement distills the lively, improvised nature into an arrangement for intermediate violin with chords and suggested strumming patterns (for guitar, ukelele, mandolin or any other plucked instruments). The harmonies and melody continue to sway in their relations in a curious and yet logical progression. I have provided score and parts and also a separate version of the guitar part which provides chord names and fretboard symbols; this would make it useful for educational purposes. Many years ago I wrote arrangements of 8 Jewish melodies (which are still available for flute and guitar, for clarinet and guitar and also for guitar trio).
This year (2018) I decided to make more varied arrangements for the melody instrument and guitar duo format, and I have compiled them here.
