The song was introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress. The opening line, I got your letter from the postman just the other day proved to be a powerful phrase for this song about a man trying desperately to hold on to his girl. The song became better known as The Postman Song instead of the more common title Because I Love You. This arrangement is in a key that works better instrumentally.

It is a love song about a modern woman whom the singer has fallen totally in love with to the extent of falling for her endearing quirks as well as her flaws. The single peaked at No. 17 in the U.S. in 1977, and at No. 53 in the UK in 1986, Joel stated in an interview that he was attempting to replicate the fingerpicking common in folk guitar music. He accomplishes this by playing arpeggiated triads in the right hand. He also notes that the production was purposely minimal to capture the purity of the tune as a folk song.

Thanks, John. If I Were a Rich Man is a show tune from the 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof.  A Critical and Musical Survey explained that the song contains a greater number of Jewish commonplaces than any other number in the score, and added the song does twofold: it offers such a strong dose of idiom early in the show [which] is good for the overall unity, and the important dramatic function of introducing the central character of Tevye through song.  A repeated phrase throughout the song, all day long I'd bidi-bidi-bum, is often misunderstood to refer to Tevye's desire not to have to work.  However, in an interview with Terry Gross, Sheldon Harnick said he basically made up syllables that he thought would give the effect of Chassidic chanting.

This song is written in 12/8, which is commonly used in slow rock and pop ballad. It could be an excellent exercise to learn the compound rhythm. Once you get used to reading and feeling the notes in groups of 3, it makes more sense. However with the 16notes in the music, a 12/8-bar is way too long and clumsy to read, hence in this arrangement, each bar is divided into two by a dotted barline because a 12/8-bar is actually two 6/8-bars.
This arrangement follows the complete song form as the original recording. All sections are labeled, along with the chord symbols and lyrics. The first verse and second verse have different LH accompaniment, and the bridge has some exciting stops adhere to the melody, which is fun to play.
Suitable for students Grade 5 and above.
