I guess I bought it because I saw the name Bach on its cover. I have to confess however that I was unable to go through it all; the Gödel theorems and others were beyond my elementary knowledge of math and science. Early this summer I accidentally found an article in The Atlantic about a conversation between Sami Al-Suwailem and Professor Hofstadter regarding a question that the former presented to the LLM (large-language-model), ChatGPT: Why Did I Write GEB? NB: GEB is an acronym of Gödel, Escher, Bach. The conversation between them about ChatGPT was hilarious; basically Hofstadter said ChatGPT is ridiculously clumsy and inept. I, on the other hand, immediately thought: wouldn't it be fun to set excerpts of the GEB text in a song cycle for tenor and piano?I wrote to Prof. Hofstadter and he was enthusiastic about my idea of a GEB song cycle and encouraged me to go ahead.After reading through the tome of 700-plus pages (and skimming through the over my head mathematical parts), I came up with eight paragraphs of texts which I set to music.1. Catharina Josepha Pratten (15 November 1824 – 10 October 1895) was a German guitar virtuoso, composer, and teacher, also known as Madame Sidney Pratten. A legendary composer, virtuosa, editor and teacher ( among her pupils were the daughters of Queen Victoria!), she was born in Cologne/ Germany as Catharina Josepha Pelzer in 1824, toured as child prodigy with Giulio Regondi, married flutist and composer Robert Pratten and lived then until her death in 1895 in London.She was born Catharina Josepha Pelzer in Mülheim on 15 November 1824,[1] the daughter of the German guitarist and music teacher Ferdinand Pelzer. Her family moved to England in 1829. On 24 September 1854, she married the English flautist Robert Sidney Pratten.Catharina began touring in Europe from the age of eight, and by 1844 was well known in England as a composer and guitar teacher. She soon established her school - Madame Sidney Pratten's Guitar School - and published tutorials, including Guitar School: a Book of Methods (1859) and Learning the Guitar: Simplified (1874), which advocated the use of alternative tuning in E major. Her pupils included Queen Victoria’s daughters Louise, Princess of Wales and Beatrice, and the actor, singer, guitarist, and composer Ernest Shand.She composed some 250 works, most of them for solo guitar or voice and guitar. Heike Matthiesen has recorded some of the guitar pieces, including the variations on Carnaval de Venise, the two Fairy Sketches, and the Serenade.Her residence in London was 22 Dorset Street, Portman Square, where she lived after the death of her husband in 1868, and where she died on 10 October 1895. Her sister, Giulia Pelzer (also a teacher), continued to run the guitar school after Catharina’s death. Catharina is buried at Brompton Cemetery, London.[She owned many guitars herself and selected others for her pupils, often with her label inside. One - in splendid condition - was advertised for sale in The Times in 1939.

Brecht's 'Grand Guignol' masterpiece, Pirate-Jenny, was penned sometime before the idea of a 'play with music', based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera, was conceived. It was even set to music (to Brecht's own tune, which Weill used as the basis for the chorus in his setting). One of many 'greatest hits' from Brecht and Weill's Threepenny Opera - itself, a huge hit when premiered in 1928 in Berlin, and again, on Broadway, with English lyrics by Marc Blitzstein, it has absolutely nothing to do with the characters or the action in The Threepenny Opera! But, it was too good a song not to be used! Interpreted by greats, such as Nina Simone, among others, this song, like Mack the Knife and September Song, continues to wow generation after generation!

Thanks, John.  This song began life in 1930 as a nine-bar phrase with the working title There's No Stopping Me Now.  Its title phrase Nice work if you can get it came from an English magazine.  It was one of nine songs the Gershwin brothers wrote for the movie A Damsel in Distress in which it was performed by Fred Astaire with backing vocals by The Stafford Sisters.  The song was published in 1937.  The first jazz recording of the work was by Tommy Dorsey three weeks after the release of the film.  The song was recorded by many jazz singers and adopted by bebop instrumentalists; Jerry Newman recorded pianist Thelonious Monk performing the tune in 1941 at Minton's Playhouse, a nightclub closely connected with early bebop, and he subsequently recorded it several times.

Be that as it may, this looks suspiciously like a censorship issue, and as a song that debuted in a movie, it would be subject to the restrictions of the Production Code. Later on, in 1957, the Everly Brothers' Wake Up, Little Susie was banned in Boston, because it told of a dating couple who fell asleep at the movies and would be scandalously late coming home.
