Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. She paints musical portraits of the things that bring meaning to life: relationship to living things, emotional healing, discovering what matters most and honoring that as best we are able. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. Listening to her music is like taking a journey. She delves into depths of emotion, often taking the listener to places that can be difficult to go without the comfort of a beautiful song to accompany them.In addition.

In liturgical churches, it functions beautifully as a congregational sung response following the Prayers of the People (or even replacing the Prayers of the People). In evangelical settings, it can be sung as a stand-alone worship hymn right after the sermon, or as part of a set of worship songs at the beginning or conclusion of the service. I am a prolific songwriter, and I've been writing music for 35+ years now. Through all of those years, there have only been a handful of occasions where I have felt more like a conduit of the Holy Spirit than the composer of the hymn; this was definitely one of those times. This is Our Prayer is written in the key of F Major, making it highly accessible for beginning church accompanists. It has a moderate tempo, set in a 3/4 time signature with a lilting rhythm. The vocal range is designed for robust congregational singing. The melody line is just one octave, ranging from Middle C to the C above it; the Alto line is just a six note range, from Middle C to the A above. This score includes the piano accompaniment in a strophic, hymn style format, two-part vocal harmony, and guitar chords (which can also assist pianists who play by chord + melody line, instead of by reading the score). The simplicity of this hymn does not detract from its' beauty, however. This is a highly singable, memorable tune with some interesting rhythmic patterns. The lyrics of this hymn are loosely based on Romans 12:12-21 (As far as it depends upon you, live at peace with all people). The words of the hymn are truly a prayer, asking God for peace, but they also remind us that as people of faith, we are invited to participate WITH God in the process of making peace on earth, by how we pray, live, give, and place our trust in God. One lyric reads that we dare to pray for peace; this is an intentional choice on my part, flagging the potential costliness of becoming people who prioritize peace. The week this hymn was released to Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music Unlimited, Reverbnation, and Deezer, it debuted at #30 on the Top 100 Contemporary Christian Music Charts on Spotify. The YouTube video version of the hymn (link attached below) was viewed over 7,000 times in the first ten days, by people in over 40 countries. You are welcome to stream it for worship services, on church websites, and on social media. The more people view it, the more ad revenue it will generate, and all profits from the sale of this hymn in any form (video ad revenue, digital MP3 sales on the sites listed above, and the sale of this musical score) will be donated to the Red Cross and the United Church of Canada's Mission & Service Fund; both of these registered charities have targeted programs running to assist Ukrainians who've been displaced by the war. Once the Ukrainian war ends, I will continue to send all profits from the hymn to those same charities to help refugees in other conflict zones. May this hymn comfort and discomfort you. Written originally by Norman Span AKA King of the Radio, Harry Belafonte made the Calypso song ' Matilda' famous and Rt Honourable Dr Louise Bennett Coverley OM OJ MBE known affectionately as Miss Lou went on to adapt the tune as a children's Happy Birthday song for her childrens programmes.I actually played with her as a teenager on her children's programme, Ring Ding, which aired on JBCin the 1070's. I had the honour and pleasure of playing this and other songs with her a few times as Marjorie Whylie, her usual pianist, had broken her wrist (my mothere even looked after her at the University Hospital - small world Kingston !). Â I remember her taking me under her wing and I even had a chance to visit her in her lovely home in Gordon Town, St Andrew. She left an indelible mark on me. Â Now I have a chance to write,arrange and record my favourite pieces from her repertoire. Â I have sung this to children in primary schools in South London. Â I have tried to retain but update the calyspo feel in the bass clef and my producer Jaja Wray has enhanced this with his percussion and drum patterns and other fills. This track will be released in April 2024.

Catharina Josepha Pratten (15 November 1824 – 10 October 1895) was a German guitar virtuoso, composer, and teacher, also known as Madame Sidney Pratten. A legendary composer, virtuosa, editor and teacher ( among her pupils were the daughters of Queen Victoria!), she was born in Cologne/ Germany as Catharina Josepha Pelzer in 1824, toured as child prodigy with Giulio Regondi, married flutist and composer Robert Pratten and lived then until her death in 1895 in London.She was born Catharina Josepha Pelzer in Mülheim on 15 November 1824,[1] the daughter of the German guitarist and music teacher Ferdinand Pelzer. Her family moved to England in 1829. On 24 September 1854, she married the English flautist Robert Sidney Pratten.Catharina began touring in Europe from the age of eight, and by 1844 was well known in England as a composer and guitar teacher. She soon established her school - Madame Sidney Pratten's Guitar School - and published tutorials, including Guitar School: a Book of Methods (1859) and Learning the Guitar: Simplified (1874), which advocated the use of alternative tuning in E major. Her pupils included Queen Victoria’s daughters Louise, Princess of Wales and Beatrice, and the actor, singer, guitarist, and composer Ernest Shand.She composed some 250 works, most of them for solo guitar or voice and guitar. Heike Matthiesen has recorded some of the guitar pieces, including the variations on Carnaval de Venise, the two Fairy Sketches, and the Serenade.Her residence in London was 22 Dorset Street, Portman Square, where she lived after the death of her husband in 1868, and where she died on 10 October 1895. Her sister, Giulia Pelzer (also a teacher), continued to run the guitar school after Catharina’s death. Catharina is buried at Brompton Cemetery, London.[She owned many guitars herself and selected others for her pupils, often with her label inside. One - in splendid condition - was advertised for sale in The Times in 1939.

Here is my 1976 Oratorio on Winnie the Pooh (Poohratorio) for alto voice, spoken parts, guitar and various optional other instrumentsGreat fun for young and old. It uses the whole of Chapter 8 of A A Milne's Now we are six -The expotition to the North Pole, which is now in the public domain in the USA.The pdf file is the score based on the alto and guitar parts with spoken voices provided in text on the score.CHAPTER 8 ...IN WHICH CHRISTOPHER ROBIN LEADS AN EXPOTITION TO THE NORTH POLEONE fine day Pooh had stumped to the top of the Forest to see if his friend Christopher Robin was interested in Bears at all. At breakfast that morning (a simple meal of marmalade spread lightly over a honeycomb or two) he had suddenly thought of a new song. It began like this:Sing Ho! For the life of a Bear.When he had got as far as this, he scratched his head, and thought to himself That's a very good start for a song, but what about the second line? He tried singing Ho, two or three times, but it didn't seem to help. Perhaps it would be better, he thought, if I sang Hi for the life of a Bear. So he sang it . . . but it wasn't. Very well, then, he said, I shall sing that first line twice, and perhaps if I sing it very quickly, I shall find myself singing the third and fourth lines before I have time to think of them, and that will be a Good Song. Now then:Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear! I don't much mind if it rains or snows, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice new nose! I don't much care if it snows or thaws, 'Cos I've got a lot of honey on my nice clean paws! Sing Ho! for a Bear! Sing Ho! for a Pooh! And I'll have a little something in an hour or two! He was so pleased with this song that he sang it all the way to the top of the Forest, and if I go on singing it much longer, he thought, it will be time for the little something, and then the last line won't be true. So he turned it into a hum instead.  ..... etc.
