Published by John Ross (A0.1355201). Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's best loved choruses. It comes from his Cantata no.147, written in 1723 during his first year as Thomaskantor of Leipzig. It is here arranged for SS choir, Flute and Piano. The flute part is designed to interweave with Bach's original accompaniment, which features almost continuous triplet movement. The words are by the British Poet Laureate Robert Bridges (1844-1930). This piece is a great choice for performance at weddings and in concerts generally. Similar arrangements (for Soprano or Tenor solo, and for Soprano and Tenor duet) are available on this website.

This arrangement expands on some of the ideas of the original piece by changing a few lyrics for dramatic emphasis and restructuring the end of the bridge to reflect the energy of typical choral show groups. This piece is written ideally for a smaller bass voice ensemble but could be done with a larger group by adjusting the optional solo parts. The most important aspect of this piece is how expressive the lyrics and story become through the amplified musical motifs. Focus on creating powerful legato phrases and blending all voices to feel fluid. This piece is the first arrangement I have ever published and I hope you enjoy the changes I've made as much as I do! Howard (A0.1088808). This piece is an original arrangement based on the wistful English folk melody 'Barbara Allen'. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for two-part (SA) choir or duet, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SA choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for duet. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The solo/unison and 4-part SATB versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer, are also available via Sheet Music Plus. Howard (A0.998885). This is an original setting of a text commonly associated with a movement from Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, for use in worship or concerts at Christmas. The lilting rhythms of compound metre portray the gentle rocking of a baby's crib, clearly referring to the song's subject matter. Textural variation in the piano and choral parts provide variety in each verse. The piece is appropriate for most standards of two-part (SA) choir, or duet, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment is quite pianistic but can be played/adapted on the organ. The original simple unison setting, as well as versions for solo voice, and for SATB choir, are also available via Sheet Music Plus.
