This is a bit of an oddity, admittedly, but in the event that you have a virtuoso pianist and a treble choir performing together at Christmas, it could be just what you're looking for! Such was the case in 2016, when Vancouver pianist Jane Coop was the guest of Elektra Women's Choir at their annual Chez Nous holiday concert. I created this piece in order to have something on the programme that was both Christmassy and yet involved the full-on pianism that would typically be on display at one of Jane's solo recitals. Somehow I managed to combine the melodies of not one but two familiar carols (Joy to the World and O Thou Joyful Day) with the flamboyant filigree and wild chromatics -- joyful in their own right! -- of Chopin's Ã‰tude Op. 10, No.8. The result, according to Elektra's artistic director, Morna Edmundson, is a fun, bright, and somewhat dizzying experience!

Cradle Song (Two-Part Choir) is a brand new composition thatâ€™s perfect for the Christmas season. It was inspired by a text from the great 18th century English hymn writer Isaac Watts. In addition to 700 hymns, Watts wrote Joy to the World and is considered the father of the English hymn. In my piece I used a few of Watts' most attractive lines including, Heavenly blessings without number, gently falling on thy head, and omitted those referring to Horned oxen, cursed sinners and burning flames. Cradle Song incorporates lush modern keyboard harmonies in attractive piano interludes. Pianists may recognize subtle references to Chopinâ€™s famous Prelude in D-flat, the Raindrop Prelude. To me, raindrops falling helped paint an emotional picture of heavenly blessings gently falling on the Christ child. Comfortable vocal ranges and many unison lines make the two-part treble version sing-able by young choirs and even two soloists. Cradle Song is available in multiple formats including SATB, SAB, in addition to this Two-Part Treble for small choirs.
