Published by World Projects Corporation (A0.1027798). The text for Closer to Home is taken from a hymn written by Norbert Čapek (1870-1942.) Čapek was born in Bohemia and later became the founder of the Unitarian Church in the Czech Republic. Čapek joined the Unitarian Church while living in the U.S. escaping unwanted government pressure over his political and religious views. He also worked to gain U.S. support for a free state of Czechoslovakia. After World War I, he returned to Prague and it’s at this time he founded his church. During World War II, Čapek was accused of treason and sent to the Dachau concentration camp. He was put to death in 1942.The lyrics describe a traveler eager to the return home after a long journey. The journey is full of wonder and as it nears its end the anticipation grows. During the last stanza, Čapek reveals the story traces the traveler's journey through life and werealize how far the they have come.

Published by Tully Road Music (A0.1346467). Die Forelle (D. 550, Op. 32) is among Schubert’s early contributions to the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, and although many of them became popular, Die Forelle was – and still is – one of the most widely recognized and performed. Composed in 1817, Die Forelle takes its text from a 1783 poem of the same name by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. In it, a casual observer stands on the banks of a tranquil stream, admiring the movements of a “frisky†fish as it darts below the surface. The tone of the music changes when, to the observer’s horror, a fisherman puts an end to both his and the trout’s merriment by snagging the fish on his hook and reeling him in. In a final stanza which Schubert omits from his setting, we learn that Schubart’s poem is actually a metaphorical story intended to warn young women against the trickery of their young male suitors. As in Gretchen am Spinnrade and many other Lieder, Schubert “characterizes†the piano accompaniment, in this case through both the upward-winding sixteenth-note triplets representing the wriggling movements of a fish, and the abrupt shift towards agitated rhythms in measure 33 when the fish is hooked. The song gained such swift popularity that only two years after its composition in 1817, Schubert was commissioned to write an instrumental chamber work incorporating music from Die Forelle. The result was his Trout Quintet of 1819 (Piano Quintet in A Major, D. 667), the fourth movement of which is a set of variations on the Die Forelle tune.This arrangement is also available for 3-part treble (SSA) voices published by Hal Leonard Corporation, 10500871.

Published by Servant Song Music and Ministry (A0.921769). Through All of Our DaysI wrote this contemporary worship hymn in 2022 with Ash Wednesday and the liturgical season of Lent in mind. It is set in a lilting, 3/4 time signature, and is easy for beginning accompanists to play (it's in the key of F Major). The melodic range and rhythmic patterns make this piece highly accessible for robust congregational singing, but don't mistake simplicity for banality! Through All Of Our Days is still a deeply engaging and memorable hymn. The piano/vocal/guitar version of the hymn also includes some beautiful vocal harmonies between the soprano and alto voices. If you would like a full SATB score, that version is also available on Sheet Music Plus. Although I composed this hymn for a particular liturgical season, several congregations and clergy colleagues have also requested it for use during funerals/memorial services, at baptisms, confirmations, and covenanting services. The lyrics make it a highly relevant choice for worship services that include any life milestones or transitions. Thou Art My Beloved Son is a Liturgical Anthem specifically for the First Sunday after Epiphany. (Although the message is timeless and could be used in any service). The text is adapted from the prescribed scripture readings for the Church of England/American Episcopal. (Actual verses used are: Mark 1:11, Isaiah 42:6-7, Eph. 1:17-18, Jer. 31:9.) The Anthem is for 2 part Mixed Choir with Organ. It is in neo-Baroque style with chanting influences in the verses and simple imitative lines in the antiphon. There are 4 verses and a soloist (or 4 different soloists) introduces each verse text before it is taken up by the whole choir.I have marked it pure and simple with brightness. It is a joyful Hymn of Epiphany that works well with choirs of any size and ability. This Easy piece has become a repertoire standard in many of my choirs.6 pages, 2:45 minutesTemporary recording is a piano reduction of 2 verses.
