This Virgina Reel style dance originated in Scotland, but It was popular in the US in the mid-1800s and was called a play party or social dance.Setup: longways setVerse 1: The lead partners link hands and sashay down the center of the lines and then back up to their original spots.Verse 2: Partners do a right elbow turn, then a left elbow turn and back to their original spots.Verse 3: The lead partners cast off and lead their lines to the bottom of the set. The lead partners make an arch for the rest of the partners to go under.Verse 4: The first set of partners to go under the arch lead the lines back to the top of the set and they get ready to become the new lead partners for the next round.This a cappella choral arrangement is also available in 3-part, SAB, and SATB.

Composer’s Note - DaybreakDuring the Winter of 2016, I journeyed to my hometown Canberra for a job interview and audition. It was for the head of the new Music Academy at Canberra Girls Grammar School, my old school. Which was kind of weird. As part of my specifically designed interview/audition experience, I was required to run a composition workshop, and this song D​aybreak ​is the result of that.It was an odd experience to return to the scenes of my youth, to see how much everything had changed. So many new buildings, so many of the old buildings repurposed, so many more opportunities afforded to the girls at the school now than we could ever have dreamed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was pretty early in the morning when I arrived, the winter mist just beginning to clear to one of those perfect sunny cold Canberra days. The school is directly down the road from Parliament House, and as the mist cleared to reveal that magnificent flagpole above the treetops surrounding the school, I decided that the joy and optimism of a new day would be the perfect subject for our composing collaboration.The girls were very generous with their ideas. The song was finished within a few days and I sent it back to the school. I ​think​ they liked it? It was hard to tell from their response. I didn’t get the job. (No surprise to me, as I have almost never been successful at auditions and job interviews. Fortunately people just know my work, ask me to do stuff, and I just say yes. Haha.) But I’m a big believer in creativity as a way of healing. I still really like our song we wrote, those lovely girls and I, so I am releasing it into the wild.

And he came unto him, and said unto him: ‘There were two men in one city: the one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds; 3 but the poor man had nothing save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and reared; and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. 4 And there came a traveler unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.’ 5 And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan: ‘As Yahweh lives, the man that hath done this deserves to die; 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.’ 7 And Nathan said to David: ‘You art the man.’…] The news is brought back to DAVID and BATHSHEBA. After an appropriate period of mourning, DAVID calls for BATHSHEBA and takes her as his wife and eventually gives birth to a son. DAVID in the meantime still conceals to himself the actions that precipitated URIAH’S death. NATHAN confronts DAVID about a rich man in the town who has stolen a lamb from a poor man. DAVID outraged at the injustice tells NATHAN that the man will die for his unfeeling actions. NATHAN then reveals that he (DAVID) is that man [There Were Two Men – Nathan and the Prophetess’]. Now at last the matter is exposed and David must face his actions. As NATHAN and the prophets leave, one of DAVID’S men comes in and tells him that his son has died. The verses are in unison and there is a descant part in the choruses. The anthem can be performed with piano accompaniment, and there is also an optional separate trumpet part which adds a glorious sheen and helps to set the atmosphere. Alternatively, a backing track (available separately) can accompany the voices without the need for additional instruments. This is a short score of just the vocal parts.
