Do you want to build a rocket? was originally composed for a wonderful group of children I worked with at the Young Music Society Winter School in Canberra. The first day that I went in to meet them, I sat down with them on the floor and asked them what kind of performance they wanted to build. It was around the time that the Disney animated feature Frozen was very popular with kids. Or not, as it turns out, because one little boy’s hand shot up straight away and he said: “Tell you what I don’t wanna build: a stupid snowman!†He suggested we build a rocket instead. So that’s what we did. It’s a song about the wonder and curiosity we feel about the universe, of our desire to explore it, and of the determination and grit required to achieve that dream. It’s some very hard yards to build a rocket and to learn to fly it, but our dreams are always worth the work! I hope you have fun with this song. Teachers, I invite you to get as theatrical as you dare with it. In our original performance we had all these toy instruments, toy toolkits, and painted cardboard boxes. (So many boxes!). Let’s just say, if you think it’s gonna be ‘too much’, it’s probably exactly the right amount. Sally Whitwell August 2022.

Composer’s Note - DaybreakDuring the Winter of 2016, I journeyed to my hometown Canberra for a job interview and audition. It was for the head of the new Music Academy at Canberra Girls Grammar School, my old school. Which was kind of weird. As part of my specifically designed interview/audition experience, I was required to run a composition workshop, and this song D​aybreak ​is the result of that.It was an odd experience to return to the scenes of my youth, to see how much everything had changed. So many new buildings, so many of the old buildings repurposed, so many more opportunities afforded to the girls at the school now than we could ever have dreamed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was pretty early in the morning when I arrived, the winter mist just beginning to clear to one of those perfect sunny cold Canberra days. The school is directly down the road from Parliament House, and as the mist cleared to reveal that magnificent flagpole above the treetops surrounding the school, I decided that the joy and optimism of a new day would be the perfect subject for our composing collaboration.The girls were very generous with their ideas. The song was finished within a few days and I sent it back to the school. I ​think​ they liked it? It was hard to tell from their response. I didn’t get the job. (No surprise to me, as I have almost never been successful at auditions and job interviews. Fortunately people just know my work, ask me to do stuff, and I just say yes. Haha.) But I’m a big believer in creativity as a way of healing. I still really like our song we wrote, those lovely girls and I, so I am releasing it into the wild.

Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774771). Ebony and Ivory was written by Paul McCartney and released in March 1982 as a recoding by Paul along with Stevie Wonder. It reached number one on both the UK and the US charts. It was Stevie Wonder's first number-one single in the UK, his only other one being I Just Called to Say I Love You in 1984.At a very basic level, the song is about the black and white keys on a piano. But at a deeper level, the ebony and ivory keys are a metaphor for racial harmony, equality and integration. Paul liked the piano analogy, since you can play the instrument using just the white keys or just the black keys, but to make great music, you really have to combine the two.Ebony and Ivory is available in four arrangements (all with piano accompaniment) for SATB, SSA, SAB and 2-Part choirs.Each arrangement begins with a classically-inspired piano accompaniment that soon modulates into the soft rock feel that made this song so popular for so many decades. Solo options are included and the well-known guitar solo has be rewritten as a scat solo with the option to ad lib over the repeated motifs.
