The bel canto composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) dedicated his arietta “Vaga luna, che inargenti†to Giluetta Pezzi, an Italian writer. The work is based on an anonymous text and was first published in 1838 by Casa Ricordi with two other songs by Bellini, “Il fervido desiderio†and “Dolente immagine di Fille mia.†Ricordi later included “Vaga luna†in a larger collection of Bellini’s songs published in 1935 to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the composer’s death. “Vaga luna†is a love poem in which the writer yearns to be reunited with his beloved. He repeatedly asks the moon, the “only witness to [his] ardent desire,†to “tell her†of the depth and sincerity of his feelings, and of his hopes that the future will bring them together. This arrangement preserves Bellini’s original piano part and places the melody prominently in the top tenor voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for SSA voices.

The lullaby Bye-lo, Baby-o functions as a sol-mi-la ostinato alongside the humorous Appalachian folk song, What’ll I Do with the Baby-o. Gaudette’s adapted lyrics offer ways to soothe a baby who won’t go to sleep:  Wrap him up in calico, send him to his mammy-o.  Tickle his chin, wiggle his toes, blow on his belly and touch his nose.  Dance him north, dance him south, put a little binky in his mouth. The energetic music offers 2nd-3rd grade students an experience of 16th-note patterns while remaining in a middle- to high-D octave range. This is an upbeat piece suitable for any concert occasion. It is especially appropriate for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day celebrations.

Published by Tully Road Music (A0.1346467). Die Forelle (D. 550, Op. 32) is among Schubert’s early contributions to the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, and although many of them became popular, Die Forelle was – and still is – one of the most widely recognized and performed. Composed in 1817, Die Forelle takes its text from a 1783 poem of the same name by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. In it, a casual observer stands on the banks of a tranquil stream, admiring the movements of a “frisky†fish as it darts below the surface. The tone of the music changes when, to the observer’s horror, a fisherman puts an end to both his and the trout’s merriment by snagging the fish on his hook and reeling him in. In a final stanza which Schubert omits from his setting, we learn that Schubart’s poem is actually a metaphorical story intended to warn young women against the trickery of their young male suitors. As in Gretchen am Spinnrade and many other Lieder, Schubert “characterizes†the piano accompaniment, in this case through both the upward-winding sixteenth-note triplets representing the wriggling movements of a fish, and the abrupt shift towards agitated rhythms in measure 33 when the fish is hooked. The song gained such swift popularity that only two years after its composition in 1817, Schubert was commissioned to write an instrumental chamber work incorporating music from Die Forelle. The result was his Trout Quintet of 1819 (Piano Quintet in A Major, D. 667), the fourth movement of which is a set of variations on the Die Forelle tune.This arrangement is also available for 3-part treble (SSA) voices published by Hal Leonard Corporation, 10500871.

Although Rückert did not originally give the poem a title, Schubert titled his song after its first line, “Du bist die Ruh’,†and Rückert later titled his poem “Kehr ein bei mir,†or “Stay with me.†With a simple yet beautiful melody, sung with a seemingly uninterrupted legato, Schubert conveys the sense of “calm†and “peace†the poet feels in the companionship of his beloved. So many of the Lieder by 19th-century composers like Schubert and Schumann, chief proponents of the genre, lend themselves well to rearrangement for multiple voices. Here, D. Jason Bishop makes one of the most frequently performed German Lieder available to tenor-bass ensembles in a TTB arrangement that preserves both the melodic integrity of the song as well as its original piano accompaniment. The Vocal Percussion (Beatboxing) should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with much of the groove and vibe it needs.The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. Recently, in May of 2021, he enlarged the melody with 10 voices and made the MP3 and this MTV., which includes the original poem, the English translation and back translation from English to modern Chinese. Due to the difference of lunar calendar and solar calendar about 1-2 months late. The original poem had used the February to show the month of flowering. But, that month does not have to many flowers to open. So, the translator used the April to replace the February. And the back translation to modern Chinese also used the fourth month. .

Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.1111236). In this post-pandemic era, demand for octavos for smaller choirs is on the rise. This lovely piece is an arrangement for SB chorus and piano of the solo lied by Franz Schubert Der gute Hirt, D. 449. Schubert's original German text was a poetic interpretation of Psalm 23; here it is given the more traditional Biblical treatment. The choral writing is not difficult and is fairly straightforward block harmony. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work as a duet. It is also available in arrangements for expanded voices.
