My Brother Upton is a humorous solo Bass/ singer performance piece. It enjoyed some attention at The Hartt School of Music with world famous bassist Robert Black helping to solidify its premier performance. The inspiration for it's virtuosity comes from a similar place as the famous work, Failing by Tom Johnson. The piece is a back in fourth argument of an upright bass and it's player, pretending that the two are fighting siblings. The bass becomes the annoying younger sibling that fights with the performer the whole time. It was performed many times since its debut and would make any recital or concert a hit! A male version is available as well, with alternate lyrics and range. Duration: Apx. 2'45.

Composer’s Note - Growing into meOn a particularly blustery Winter's day, I went to the National Arboretum in my home town of Canberra, Australia, with a bunch of very lovely kids from the Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC). Their director Alpha Gregory had asked me to come and do a composition workshop with the kids, to which I had replied with an enthusiastic YES!.I'd done this kind of thing with WVYC before, but this time around I wanted to take it somehow to the next level, to give the piece a real sense of place, a specific and experiential connection to the local community or landscape, and the Arboretum seemed a natural choice for me for an inspirational excursion. I had a family connection to it myself at the time, my cousin Emma worked there and was very passionate about it. Also, it is an outdoorsy kind of place and I have such fond memories of outdoorsy exploratory kinds of activities filling my entire childhood, a very typically Canberran thing. I'm sure the WVYC kids have a similar experience and I hope they know how lucky they are!So we put on our winter coats and scarves and hiked up the mountain, being sure to not only look at what was there, but also to listen, to touch, to smell. It was truly a multi sensory experience. Then we all went down to a local church hall and talked about what we saw and heard and smelt and the kids were just bursting with wonderful ideas for our new song. I've incorporated as many of their ideas as possible into the completed product, as well as my own over-arching theme; the oldest of the trees at the National Arboretum are only a couple of years older than some of the children in the group, so it seemed a nice parallel to make, their growing up alongside each other. It is my hope that the writing of this piece bonds these children to this important and magical place, so ripe with possibility, and that the connection is a lasting and meaningful one for them. It certainly will be for me.-- Sally Whitwell

It’s for two singers, soprano and alto -- or a choir of sopranos and altos -- with piano accompaniment. Appropriate instruments might take the place of soprano and alto – e.g. flute and violin. The lyrics are based on this prayer: Be silent, still, aware. For there, in our own heart, the Spirit is at prayer. Listen and learn, open and find, heart wisdom: Christ! In the audio sample, you’ll hear the voices without the words.

Composer’s Note - Choosing Our Own AdventureCanberra in the 1980s was a pretty fun place to be for a little kid. Well, i liked it. Playtime was very outdoorsy, with Lake Burley Griffin and other large tracts of bushland only twenty minutes from a​ nywhere​, it was easy to be somewhere beautiful pretty quickly. There was lots of bike riding, roller skating, tree climbing, skipping stones on the water, and running through waist high piles of autumn leaves. The change of seasons is so colourfully vivid in Canberra, it just makes you want to be outside to taste it!I’ve tried to capture that playfulness in this song which I dedicate to my big brother James with whom I spent so many of those childhood weekends. The name of the piece pays tribute to a series of books we loved to read, Choose Your Own Adventure​.-- Sally Whitwell

In my mind I wish to keep, The memory of fall so deep, The beauty of its golden leaves That flutter softly to the eaves. © 2007 Airlie Clarke My niece wrote this poem as a young girl when inspired by autumn in Ancaster, Ontario. Voice A sings the melody throughout, with additional vocal lines and harmonies from Voice B. The key is a tone lower than the original, and the second verse up the octave, to place it more suitably into children's ranges - they really want to belt out the chorus.The timings of the ‘hey’s in the chorus are difficult, spend some time clapping on the correct beat to get your choir use to the syncopation. Musically it is typical of the era, and would typically be used as music suitable for a quickstep or for tap dancing. The offensive lyrics of the original have been replaced with the amendment used in the 1984 revival of the show, Me And My Girl, written by Stephen Fry. The arrangement is written for 2 voices and could be used in any combination of voice types, so feel free to adapt and see what works best in your situation. There is a simple piano accompaniment which can be embellished with other instruments, and a vocal score is included so that the singers can avoid juggling with lots of pages.
