Published by Standard Time (A0.761688). This setting of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem, The Wind, from A Child's Garden of Verses, is composed for two-part SA treble chorus with piano accompaniment. The extended tonal harmonies ask students to hear and resolve suspended and non-chord pitches within easily accessible thirds and sixths, while Part I can help develop range for the higher voices. In terms of text, Stevenson’s poem provides mature lyrics for young musicians as well as an opportunity for cross-discipline literary learning. A current and respected choral director who reviewed the piece referred to the piano accompaniment as fun to play and varied nicely. In response to the piece as a whole, she also said, I do think the young choral world can use more challenging pieces..

Howard (A0.1398873). This work is an unaccompanied two-part choral setting of the famous poem by Christina Rossetti. It features a 3-verse structure (mirroring the text), with coda. The piece builds up throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a two-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SA choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. Published by John Ross (A0.1355201). Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's best loved choruses. It comes from his Cantata no.147, written in 1723 during his first year as Thomaskantor of Leipzig. It is here arranged for SS choir, Flute and Piano. The flute part is designed to interweave with Bach's original accompaniment, which features almost continuous triplet movement. The words are by the British Poet Laureate Robert Bridges (1844-1930). This piece is a great choice for performance at weddings and in concerts generally. Similar arrangements (for Soprano or Tenor solo, and for Soprano and Tenor duet) are available on this website.

The text comes from a letter that Robert Inglis wrote in 1915 to the Commissioner of Pensions asking for a raise in his civil war pension. In providing information apparently requested by the Pension office, Robert details many events in his early years, adding a fair bit of sarcasm and wit to the narrative. The composer edited the content to fit into more of a strophic sea-shanty style. The piano part offers a sense of ocean waves as well as a few popular tunes of the day as commentary on the story. When he and his sister were in boarding school in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, he witnessed a historic yacht race. The following year, they sailed across the Atlantic with the family of their father’s third wife. Life with his stepmother must have been unbearable, because he “went to sea†time after time to escape the unpleasantness she brought to bear. The final departure left him shipwrecked on Hatteras with drunken shipmates. He made his way to Maryland where, to his horror, he witnessed a slave auction. Sensing the tension and possibly inspired to action, he headed west to join the 20th Indiana Infantry. He later served in the 51st Pennsylvania, the Provost Guard, and the U. S. Navy.
