Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was an influential German music critic and composer who was troubled by mental health issues for much of his life. Schumann’s enthusiasm for music was evident at an early age but he was discouraged from pursuing this as a career and encouraged towards the law instead. Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife. After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition. Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written. It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838. This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of clarinet and bassoon would make a charming feature piece at a wedding, anniversary or recital.

The Wild Horseman (literally ‘the wild rider’) features in a collection of 43 short piano pieces ‘für die Jugend’, written in 1848. At the time, Schumann had three daughters under eight years old, who perhaps inspired him to compose with young beginners in mind. Although the first part of the collection is suited to novice pianists, the later items (pieces 19 – 43) are more challenging and are labelled ‘für Erwachsenere’ – ‘for the more grown-up’. The Wild Horseman is number 8 in the collection, making it one of the ‘child-friendly’ pieces. In arranging it for the clarinet and bassoon combination, some extra difficulty, in the form of running accompaniment passages, has been added. This explains its classification as 'intermediate'.

Although reasonably successful in his native Austria, Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) achieved widespread recognition only after his death, when a number of influential 19th Century composers – including Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Dvorak – discovered and championed his writing. Schubert’s output was considerable and covered many genres, including vocal works, symphonies, incidental music, opera, chamber music and items for keyboard. Slavonic Dances Op 46, written in 1878, was something of a breakthrough work for Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, finally establishing his reputation well beyond his native land. The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances, rather than works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time. These Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, at his publisher’s request, Dvorak produced orchestrated versions shortly thereafter. The pieces proved so popular that Dvorak composed a second set, Op. 72, in 1886. Op. 46, No. 3 is in the form of the polka, a dance which originated in Bohemia. This arrangement, for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon, is best suited to players of advanced intermediate standard or above.
