Proctor (A0.809789). A piano reduction of the Concerto in Bb Major for Double Bass and Orchestra. It's a performance or rehearsal ready arrangement of the concerto. Set in the traditional fast - slow - fast format. The first movement is that might be called neo - classical. The second movement is a jazz waltz. The third movement leans toward French Impressionism. As concerto's go, this is not too difficult. However, it will require the soloist to have some mastery over the instrument. Performance time is approximately 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

Originally composed for Violin and Piano I have transcribed and arranged these for Double Bass in Orchestral tuning aiming them towards the advanced intermediate/advanced student. Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life – she died at 25. Her music was highly influenced by Faure and Debussy. The Nocturne begins sparsely, with bare octave figures wound about with a theme built from a repetitive rise-and-fall figure. As the texture becomes thicker the violin becomes more virtuosic and begins to climb. There is no harmonic resolution until the final ppp note in the top register, which is answered by a low octave from the piano. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents, tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

At the suggestion of my colleague, pianist Tricia Dawn Williams, I started work on a piece for double bass and piano for a special concert she had planned in Malta with bassist Gjorgji Cincievski.Upon beginning work on the piece I had a bit of difficulty reconciling the huge sonority and weight of tone the instrument with the piano. The more I pondered this issue, the more it pointed to thinking about the sound of the instruments in a slightly different way from other instruments. The double bass has a spectrum of sound that ranges from so low one can almost feel it more than hear it, to a quite nasal, somewhat sweet ‘head voice’ in the upper range.Because of this, the notion of some earthen, eruptive sound took hold in my imagination and this led also to the conception of many of the features of the work: vibrant low trills and fast syncopated rhythms all offset by a central slow section that is the still moments between two eruptive outer sections.I completed the work in Cincinnati, Ohio between September and December, 2012 and it has since been played in Malta, the USA and Australia by Gjorgji Cincievski and Robert Nairn.
