National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. The carol remained unpublished until 1833, but has since gained huge international popularity. Although it was a big sheet music seller at the time, it was Perry Como’s 1951 recording that turned it into a major hit. The simple harmony and melody have made this a perennial favourite with everyone from Sinatra to the Jacksons, Maria Carey and Bruce Springsteen. This version borrows from the swinging jazz style of various Sinatra recordings and is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Viola.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal Christmas performances.
