Highland Cathedral is a popular tune for the Great Highland Bagpipe, composed by German musicians Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb in 1982 for a Highland Games held in Germany. It has been proposed as a Scottish national anthem to replace the unofficial anthems Scotland the Brave and/or Flower of Scotland. In this arrangement for four voices (SATB) you will hear the spirit of the Scottish Highlands and feel the sea breeze on your face. The arrangement builds slowly from a bourdon fith to a tutti choir and should be sung in a church with plenty of reverb for maximum effect.Highland Cathedral ist eine Dudelsackmelodie, die von den Deutschen Ulrich Roever und Michael Korb 1982 in Deutschland komponiert wurde. Als Hymne für die Highland Games in Deutschland geschrieben, begeisterte sie auch die Schotten, die sie als Nationalhymne vorschlugen. In diesem Arrangement kann man die Atmosphäre der schottischen Highlands hören und die Meeresbrise auf der Haut spüren. Das Arrangement baut sich langsam von einer Bordun-Quinte zu einem Tutti-Chor auf und sollte für maximale Wirkung in einer Kirche mit viel Hall gesungen werden.

Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. I found the words fashioned in concrete on the wall of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and was very taken by them. Apparently, Hopkins went on a daytrip to the small township of Inversnaid on the eastern bank of Loch Lomond in 1881 and he wrote the poem while there.The song is written in two sections which can be layered and arranged as desired. I have suggested an arrangement on the score but feel free to change this - my only caution is to make sure you include some 'light' and 'shade' in the arrangement...it is not meant to be sung with all parts blazing for the whole length of the song!! Enjoy - and long live the wilderness yet!

The Sequence for Pentecost is one of the few sequences remaining in the liturgy. The metrical translation by Edward Caswall lends itself well to a strophic hymn setting, such as this. The mood is prayerful and meditative throughout, except in the last verse, where it expands with descant and alternative accompaniment. Traditionally sung before the Gospel Reading on Pentecost Sunday, this piece is also suitable for confirmations or retreats, or any other time in the church year.

It can be sung by a choir (separate mens' and womens' parts) and/or sung by a congregation. Here you have an arrangement with a definite Renaissance feel. I can hear finger cymbals ringing a counter rhythm throughout (sorry, I didn't write it in, but I'm sure you can figure it out). The parts are open and airy and the song has a light, joyous feel to it. While the instruments are published as violin, cello and drone (piano, etc) this should be playable by any pairings of treble and bass instruments that play in C. The simplicity of the lyrics of this carol, an adaptation of a Polish lullaby, Lulajze Jesuniu is coupled with a simplicity of form and melody in this beautiful, elegant setting. The harmonic lines, moving largely by step, can be easily learnt by choir. This short piece can be extended by singing it through twice. A suggestion is to have a cantor sing the first verse, followed by unison choir (or section) singing the second verse, and then repeat the entire piece using the SATB harmonization and the addition of descant in the final verse. If desired, the descant line can be played on any C instrument.
