Dickinson’s poem presents humanity’s hunger to know the truth about the existence of an afterlife. Many people believe, but also doubt that something exists beyond death, invisible as music, but just as real as sound. This “other world” invites us to come closer, but confounds us, leading to the tension between faith and doubt. Faith stumbles, and no drug can numb the toothache of doubt. The anthem ends as it begins, with the conviction, the faith, that our time on earth isn’t all there is. The piano accompaniment can serve however needed, just for rehearsal purposes, or when and where it might be needed during a performance.

The text in the indigenous language of Aymara comes from the poem “Uma†written by Chilean poet Pedro Humire Loredo. In the high Andean plateau called the altiplano or puna, the scarcity of water calls on the local people to share the precious and essential resource. Humire’s poetry reassures us that there is enough uma (water) for all. The popular indigenous huayño dance predates the Spanish conquest. This choral setting celebrates cooperation and sharing of water with embellished instrumental sections and optional panpipes (sikus or zampoñas) played in hocket (trenzado) and charango. Occasional shouts (gritos) may add to the excitement.

Wari means vicuña, a native wild camelid species considered to be the ancestor of the domesticated alpaca. The harsh life of the Andes takes its toll on vicuña young, leaving behind grieving vicuña mothers. The Aymara people suffer similar losses and also cry for their lost loved ones. This yaravà lament includes expressive cadenza sections for both violin and cello, traditional key and rhythm, and a choral setting of Humire’s poignant poetry.

The text of the piece is addressed to anyone facing struggles—and it presents an honest afï¬rmation that those struggles are real. Rather than deny the existence of problems or pain, the listener is encouraged to “lean into†the hardship, to name it—and to thereby reduce its power. Textually and musically, the listener is presented with the metaphor of a tree—being whipped by the wind—but built to bend in that wind and ultimately withstand the pressure-ï¬lled gales. The power of community is also afï¬rmed—as the listener is encouraged to walk alongside—to bend along with—their neighbor.
