In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

It was one of those accidents where you find something useful when you’re looking for something else. While reading on the nature of worship, a particular blog article ended with Adoniram Judson’s early 19th Century baptismal poem, Come Holy Spirit, Dove Divine. The flowing text called out (at least to me!) for a musical setting. Accordingly, some melodic and harmonic ideas began to percolate in my thoughts. However, before getting very far along in writing a tune, there were two surprises in store. First many others had already set the text to music before (with a multitude of tunes) going back to at least 1833. Second, despite being a Baptist for over forty years, I discovered that this hymn has been in the Baptist Hymnal since 1956 yet I have no recollection of every singing it! Well, chagrined at my ignorance, I carried on writing a new melody and harmony for this deserving text. I sought to make it friendly to congregational singers while still containing rich and sing-able harmonies and so aimed for a four-part hymn-style form. However, as I suspect my ignorance of the hymn is a common condition, a fresh and modern tune which would be at home in varied musical styles and have popular appeal was also pursued. The result is a delightful and uplifting tune, easy to sing, with an optimistic and forward momentum, commensurate with the meaning of believers’ baptism, Buried with Him in baptism; raised to walk in new life. The music is flexible in application to many church music styles: praise team and band, choir and organ, congregation and piano, or mix and match to fit your needs. May you find Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine, singing a much needed text, a means for your congregation to joyfully join with new believers in celebration of their baptism!

During World War One, Ithe song was recorded by John McCormack (tenor). It was destined to became a familiar standard for generations. More than 200 recordings have since been made, featuring such artists as Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.This arrangement includes the original opening verse, plus a suprising chorus set in a two-beat meter instead of a waltz. The traditional waltz style appears later, including the option of audience participation. The harmonies are not difficult to sing, but the arrangement can be simplified easily by selecting sections in unison with the piano accompaniment carrying the chords.Kathleen McGuire's arrangement was originally created for the Various Voices Choral Festival in Dublin, Ireland. Christmas in Australia is the theme song from the animated, made-for-TV movie Blinky Bill’s White Christmas, a spin-off from the Blinky Bill children’s books (by Australian writer Dorothy Wall) and the Adventures of Blinky Bill TV series. The telemovie first aired on Australia’s Seven Network on Christmas Eve of 2005. In the movie the song was sung by Christine Anu, who also reprised it at Sydney’s 2007 Carols in the Domain. Weather-wise, Christmastime in Australia is very different from that in the Northern Hemisphere. Instead of cold, snow and spending time indoors, there’s lots of sunshine, lots of colour everywhere and lots to do in the great outdoors. This delightful song – Christmas in Australia – highlights the fact that, whilst these differences do exist, the true meaning of Christmas, the reasons for rejoicing, the coming together of friends and family, the excitement of children, the decorating, and the caring and sharing are the same the world over. For on this little world of ours, we’re all one family. So, come and join us as we sing, around the Christmas tree. Christmas in Australia deserves a place in the best of Australian Christmas songs. Unfortunately, it is not as widely known and performed as it should be; perhaps because the music has not been readily available. Hopefully these new arrangements for choirs and soloists may go some way towards redressing that situation. This arrangement is available in six versions – SATB, SSA and 2-Part for choirs; Low, medium and high voice for soloists/unison choirs.

It was suggested my verse was too avaricious sounding. Feel free to change it if you agree.

This arrangement includes optional train whistles and cabasa, played by the singers to enhance the railway experience. It ends with two cheeky chords for the final whistle, Whoo Whoo. It's suitable for any SATB choir and I have also done it with individual pro singers. Older audiences remember the tune. Younger ones want to know more about Glenn Miller and the big band era. With these editions, two of his sacred a-cappella works are made available in different levels of diffculty: the German motet 'Hosianna' for Advent or Lent, and 'Tenebrae factae sunt' for Passiontide in the much-demanded instrumentation for mixed choir with only one male voice.
