Mist-Covered Mountains is a very accessible SATB choral arrangement of the gorgeous 19th century Gaelic song Chì Mi Na Mòrbheanna (usually translated as The Mist-Covered Mountains of Home). The original song was written in 1856 by John Cameron, and since then has entered the folk tradition. It was made famous by The Rankin Family in the 1970s, and many other folk artists have covered it. This arrangement was written for Belsize Community Choir in London, and is well-suited to community choirs. The refrain is in the original Gaelic, but the verses are in English.The Gaelic refrain is easily learned and a pronunciation guide is included. The tune passes among different voice parts, and is sometimes sung in unison. The (optional) piano gives solidity and depth – like the mountains themselves. There is also a part for soprano recorder. If performing the song a cappella, start at bar 7, end at bar 86, and leave out the third beat of bars 38, 54, 70 and 78.

He studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London under Hubert Parry and Frederick Bridge. Ager served as the organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew's Church in Birmingham for over 50 years. Ager also became Professor of Organ & Harmony at the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music (the predecessor of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) for nearly four decades. Although not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, Ager's music, including a variety of songs, choral, piano, and organ works, is worth exploring for those interested in late 19th and early 20th-century music. Perhaps his most famous composition is The Legend of St. Christopher, a cantata based on the medieval legend. Rejoicing is a beautiful hymn for SATB choir, which would be perfect for any number of concerts, festal days and services, such as Easter, Harvest, Earth Day, or for any suitable occasion. The register for all voices is suitable and accessible, making it an ideal addition to any choir’s repertoire. This version (in the original key of A major) has been re-engraved for both SATB short score, and long score – giving your choir the flexibility you may need. The short score has been kept as close to the original as possible, whilst the long score features some suggested extra dynamic markings. (This seems more likely than the theory that Robert Burns wrote it, although Burns certainly knew Keppel's lyrics and made his own parodies upon the words). Some later versions of the melody contain Scotch snaps but this version follows the simplest melodic line, without the Scotch snaps - which may have been closer to O'Daly's original tune - and with quite romantic choral harmonies.

The original words, a mixture of middle English and Latin, are magnificent in context, but mean little to people today. In The Saviour is born this day I have written new words that communicate a meaningful message while still conveying a sense of 16th century majesty. In this way I hope that this beautiful and regal music may once again become relevant to our Christmases. The harmonies are my own, although I have retained some of the characteristics of early 16th century heraldic music.
