Published by Roger Dean Publishing (LX.10-2091R). UPC: 000308043853.You Are My Light is the final movement of a seven section work for chorus, orchestra, and narrator entitled The World Come Of Age. Written to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of World War II, this work is based on the writings, imprisonment, and martyrdom of German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The entire work is based on the hymn tune Vater Unser (Geistlich Leider,1539). As I completed the work, it became more apparent that I had not completely addressed the suffering of the Jewish people. My solution was to add one final movement to serve as a memorial based on -Ani Ma'Am in the 12th century tune often sung by the Jewish people in the Nazi concentration camps. The final statement of this theme is sung concurrently with the Christian theme, Vater Unser, with both joining together in a psalm of David. You are my light. You are my song. Of whom shall I be afraid?

Duration c. 25-30 minutes. This 8-movement cantata contrasts the cooking of the Christmas dinner with more reflective Christmas themes, with an opportunity for the audience to join in at the end. Ideal for Christmas concerts. We welcome you to our ‘Feast for Christmas’. In the first movement, Christmas Welcome, the scene is set: but the key to a successful Christmas dinner is forward planning and in the second movement the Christmas Pudding is prepared in November, on ‘Stir-up Sunday’. In the third movement, Christmas Eve, the early twentieth century poet Robert Bridges looks back, on a frosty evening, from his own time to the very distant past, and considers what Christmas means to him. Then in the fourth movement, our Christmas Feast is prepared, and the Christmas Grace (fifth movement) is not forgotten. It is of course impolite to sing during the actual Christmas Dinner itself, but towards the end of the meal the peace is rudely interrupted by the sixth movement, Christmas Crackers. The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration. There was no king of Judah in Zechariah’s day. The former exiles who had returned to Judah were under the authority of the Persians. Any king would have to be authorized by the higher secular authority. But Zechariah foresees a king who will enter Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. ♫ The choice of the animal here is important. The donkey is the beast of burden of the common man. (Analogous to an economic or dilapidated automobile.) Horses were primarily used by soldiers; something like a victor riding into town in a tank. Mules (Jewish law forbade the breeding of hybrid animals) were the choice of the wealthy. In Judea, they were evidently imported. David had Solomon ride into Jerusalem on his mule (something like a sports car.) But Zechariah sees Messiah will presenting Himself as king riding the transportation of the common person. On Psalm Sunday, about a week before Jesus’ death, the crowds quoted Zechariah 9 and Psalm 118 as Jesus offered Himself to the nation as king. ♫ Hope of the World is made of 2 suites of songs that present messianic prophecies from the Old Testament that are referenced in the New Testament. A sermon in itself, the poem recontextualizes the struggle of the Old Testament story of Jacob wrestling with an angel to current believers' struggles with faith. Isaac Watts, one of the fathers of English hymnody, stated that this poem was worth all the verses [he] had written. It is set here to a traditional Scottish melody, Candler or Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, and arranged for SATB choir. It opens with a tenor soli, joined by the other voices. When the speaker makes demands of his divine opponent, the anthem modally shifts to the parallel minor. Eventually, the choir wrestles, as the four wrestling verses of the poem are sung at the same time in a 4-part canon. Finally, the speaker's epiphany is accompanied by a key change and a joyous conclusion in 4-part harmony.

The Pennsylvania Dutch were Germans who migrated to America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They brought with them their culture, religions, music, and cooking! The Pennsylvania Dutch language is still spoken by the Amish, the religious sect mostly known for their horses and buggies and their eighteenth century way of life. There are many different tunes associated with Reide, Reide, Geili! The song has taken on a life of its own reflecting the lives of the Amish who still sing it, and the melody and text can differ from community to community. The particular tune used for this arrangement comes from Holmes County, Ohio and is similar to the English nursery rhyme, Ring Around the Rosie. Amish parents and grandparents will sing this rhyme while bouncing their toddlers on their knee. The bouncing is to imitate a horseback ride as the song begins. At the end of each verse, the adult suddenly drops their leg to imitate the child falling off the horse. The child falls to the floor amidst a peal of laughter. The song can be sung in either Pennsylvania Dutch or in English (written underneath the Dutch). This unique arrangement will lift your audience’s spirits as they are reminded of the songs of their youth, and your singers will enjoy its high energy and pulsating rhythms! A thorough pronunciation guide is also included.

The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow oldâ€) has become known as the “Ode of Remembranceâ€, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Postâ€. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle†portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust†compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plainâ€. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight†(reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium.
