She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.Poet Kim Stafford grew up in Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, California, and Alaska, following his parents as they taught and traveled through the West. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, and the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College, where he has taught since 1979. He holds a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Oregon, and has worked as a printer, photographer, oral historian, editor, and visiting writer at a host of colleges and schools, and offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan.Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)Long before pandemic prisoned us,the trees knew how to guard their placewith roots and shade.Moss found how to hug a stone for life.Every stream knows how to move in place,stay home and yet flow outward,sending bounty far.Now is our time to practice-now to sing from balconies,now send words of comfortby any courier,now to hoard lonesome generosity-and then to shine in all directions like stars.Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, Making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

On the morning of 2 March 2020, I finished writing the first draft of this song. It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires.At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person.What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue.It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

It was first performed at the Dawn Service on the Gallipoli Peninsula by a combined choir of students from St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows' School in 2015. This atmospheric piece creates a haunting image of lives lost and dreams shattered, ultimately leaving us with a message of hope that peace will be our inheritance. This arrangement is for SATB choir and will work well with both changed and unchanged voices. There is some flexibility in the accompaniment, allowing for strings or rhythm section only to accompany the choir, or both!

Full of playful text painting, this is a true art piece, and accessible to even a moderately skilled singer. Wonderfully rocking piano ostinati illustrate the rising and falling of ocean swells and blasting chords the crashing of waves. The spiritual message here is to help us appreciate the joy of life even more intensely in the face of our eventual demise. This neo-impressionistic work would be excellent material for a faculty, student, or professional recital at conservatory or in public. Other Gorton songs are available to make a set.

The lyrics reflect the thoughts of so many of us who wonder what it felt like to those who witnessed the birth and early years of Jesus Christ. The vocal parts are all within normal ranges and of no particular difficulty. The piano accompaniment is of medium difficulty. Meter changes set off the verses from the chorus melody, one verse may be sung a cappella and there is one key change. This is appropriate for both worship services and any public Christmas program venue. Performance time is five minutes. There are two other arrangements on the website, one for vocal solo medium voice and one for two-part women's chorus or duet. The lyricist, Bruce C.
