It begins with a flowing left-hand piano accompaniment and an oboe melody. The singers interweave The Swan with J.S. Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. The result is combining two masterpieces into a seamless tapestry of sound and color.About the composer: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. In addition to her contributions to the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday, she also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. As well as serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. The text comes from a set of short poems by Ms. Nava Faith Bawayan evoking short personal impressions and reflections on each of the traditional last seven words of Christ. The music are short musical impressions in a semi-contemporary (avant-garde) style, scored for an SATB choir, Tenor and Soprano Soloists and Piano. It features call and response passages between the soloists and the choir, short canons, and easy chord clusters for certain effects. In the language of the New Testament, Koine Greek, the simple phrase Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison means Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy. By utilizing close harmonies and a fluid increase of intensity, Mark Kline’s composition is meant to suggest the heavenl-like sounds of grace in the hearts of penitents. At two minutes in length, this Kyrie works well in both church and concert settings, engaging a listening audience or aiding in reflective prayer and meditation. In the context of the Mass, the liturgical form used is three Kyrie’s, three Christe’s, and three Kyrie’s. This arrangement can also function in the Mass as a song of thanksgiving after Communion or as an opening or closing piece. Mark Kline's Kyrie is written in ten indispensable parts, and can benefit greatly from multiple singers on each part (especially the men’s continuo with its close harmonies).

The long, lyrical melody borne forward by the steady, quiet, powerful accompaniment conveys a tranquil sacredness. The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. An instrumental introduction leads to the voice calling out agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. An instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. Arrangements for other ensembles are also available (Vocal Solo, SSA, SAB) as well as separate versions featuring, Solo Violin, Flute, Oboe or Clarinet and soloist with chorus. Difficulty is moderate for the singers, instrumental soloist and pianist and is suitable for a sacred setting or the concert hall. Duration approximately 4 minutes.
