In August 2023 wildfires spread throughout the Hawaiian island of Maui, eventually destroying the town of Lahaina. With homes burned to the ground and many casualties incurred, the residents of Lahaina began to make efforts to rebuild their homeland as well as to move on from this devastating event. Inspired by these events and the artistry created by the students and teachers of Lahaina, this choral multimovement work represents the events of the horror, aftermath, and triumph from going through powerful events such as this. Each movement is distinct in their performance textures and message. Cacophony, aleatory, call and response, and even a mele hula are just some of the features included with this work. Three drums (pahu) supplement the performance with their driving rhythms and supportive, emphatic passages. This work is dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Lahaina wildfires. Singers will easily get into the habit of thinking this is terms of three beats followed by two beats. The setting follows the format of the original poem and there is a short, easy-to-sing a cappella section in the middle. It’s scored for SATB choir with keyboard accompaniment. The piano part is of medium difficulty. This piece will be a popular addition to your Nativity play or Christmas services. English.Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous poem The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere tells the story of the colonial American patriot who rides on horseback to rally his Massachusetts neighbors against the British militia. The route which the British are taking is relayed to Paul Revere by his friend in Boston, watching the army’s movements and then hanging signal lanterns in the belfry of Old North Church. “One if by land, and two if by sea.†The musical setting endeavors to capture the energy of horse and rider. Therefore, “galloping†rhythms are often heard in the piano accompaniment. As Paul Revere rides through the New England towns, the pace of the music quickens—Medford, Lexington and Concord. “So through the night rode Paul Revere.†He keeps in mind his plan and his message: “One if by land, two if by sea. It all began with the idea one morning that the other tune for Nahum Tate's carol While shepherds watched is, of course, the Yorkshire ditty On Ilkley moor bar t'hat. Well, as the afternoon progressed, other tunes got added, resulting in a curious potpourri for choir and piano. The choir gets to sing On Ilkla Moor, the Este psalter tune known to all, and also Auld Lang Syne. The second voice, in its madrigalian way, gets a sly English cadence!. Meanwhile, the piano gets some sly references to Sing a song of sixpence and Scotland the brave. I sang it in G on this mp3, to fit my multitrack range, but versions are available on sheetmusicplus in G (ATBB), C (SATB) (fairly high for the sopranos) and Bflat (SATB) (fairly low for the basses) It can also be seen as a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRXrzrSY-Vw === While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. It all began with the idea one morning that the other tune for Nahum Tate's carol While shepherds watched is, of course, the Yorkshire ditty On Ilkley moor bar t'hat. Well, as the afternoon progressed, other tunes got added, resulting in a curious potpourri for choir and piano. The choir gets to sing On Ilkla Moor, the Este psalter tune known to all, and also Auld Lang Syne. The second voice, in its madrigalian way, gets a sly English cadence!. Meanwhile, the piano gets some sly references to Sing a song of sixpence and Scotland the brave. I sang it in G on this mp3, to fit my multitrack range, but versions are available on sheetmusicplus in G (ATBB), C (SATB) (fairly high for the sopranos) and Bflat (SATB) (fairly low for the basses) It can also be seen as a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRXrzrSY-Vw === While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. Fear not! said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind. Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind. To you, in David's town, this day Is born of David's line A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign: The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid. Thus spake the seraph and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God who thus addressed their joyful song All glory be to God on high, And to the Earth be peace; Good will henceforth from heaven to men, Begin and never cease!.
