My father succumbed to lung cancer in 2007. Setting this poem helped me
through the grieving process. Bill Merideth was not a musician by trade, but did
enjoy playing the guitar every now and again. The accompaniment found in the
opening section represents some of the chords that he would strum in his recliner
after a hard week of work.
As the piece progresses, the accompaniment becomes more complex representing
the extensive chemotherapy that may have extended my father's life, but certainly
changed him. Finally, as the text brings us closer to death in the final stanza, the
accompaniment is now absent, representing my father's last days in hospice where
he could no longer care for himself.
I certainly believe in the healing power of music and hope that this setting brings
comfort and peace to you as it continues to do so for me.

Published by Whole Tone Press (A0.773758). Joy to the World is arranged in a festive style for alto solo, choir, brass quintet and piano. The alto solo is straightforward, adhering to the original melody. The choir parts are moderately easy (with some divisi) and support the soloist for the most part; however, they are given the third stanza to sing unaccompanied. The brass parts are moderate in difficulty (1st trumpet is required to play a whole note D6 at the finale). A good pianist (late intermediate +) is required to play moderately fast scale passages, both hands, during a transitional section, as well as a number of thick chord passages and leaps. This piece is ideal for use during the Christmas season in both church and concert venues. Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP. The main theme is in 7/8 time, divided into 2, 2, and 3. It might look a bit daunting to some, but it's easy when counted as 1-2-1-2-1-2-3. Its recommended that singers practise this rhythm first, perhaps by clapping on the off-beats. There’s plenty of contrast in the piece and singers are sure to enjoy the music. It’s scored for SATB choir with keyboard accompaniment. The middle section uses much vocal counterpoint and has almost a waltz feeling to it. Choir members need to be reasonably experienced at singing independent vocal parts. The piano part is of moderate difficulty but could be handled by any competent pianist. This is a new arrangement (as of Seotember 2023) in which the music has been transposed down one tone from the original. This joyful anthem would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service. The vocal range is as follows: Soprano: C4 - F5; Alto: A3 - D5; Tenor C3 - E flat 4; Bass F2 - B flat 3 (Duration 03:03).

A fantastic offer price for the full score and all parts! ... Looking for something to add a sense of oriental exoticism to your amateur orchestral/choral concert? This may be what you're looking for! This charming little suite of six dances lasts about 15½ minutes. It consists of a Pavane, Bourée, Sarabande, Allemande, Basse Danse and Galliard, which vary widely in character. As a whole the suite provides some interesting challenges for both performers and listeners. Apart from conventional strings, flute and harp (which can be either pedal or lever) you will need:- One or maybe two Arabian ouds. The parts are playable also on a fretless acoustic guitar. (Needs to be fretless because of the quarter-tones in some of the Arabic modes used.)- A cimbalom (the part can be played on a piano also, with slight modification). You might get away with using a hammered dulcimer but you'd need to make a number of compromises.- A doumbek and a djembe. These beautiful drums are a must for Middle-Eastern or African music. They're fairly easy to find, though finding somebody who can play them properly may take a bit more doing!- Finger cymbals and a gong. These are regular western instruments.- A wind-chime. Anything that produces a nice shimmering spangle of sound will probably do!- A group of singers (SATB). Nothing particularly challenging but see below.The primary oud part, the strings and the singers need to have sufficiently good intonation to pitch quarter tones. These are the exception rather than the rule, but nevertheless play an important part in the character of the music. Apart from this, the music is relatively straightforward and probably playable by any reasonably competent amateur or high school orchestra.In the spring of 2020 I wrote a set of short music tracks for a charity of which I'm a trustee. In order to protect my intellectual property rights in the music, I decided to bring it together into an attractive if not intellectually challenging little suite, hence An Omani Dance Suite. Originally the dances were all in Arabic quarter-tone temperament, but obviously quarter-tones cannot be played easily (if at all) on the flute, harp and cimbalom. So I have made some adjustments but retained the Arabic temperament wherever reasonably possible. I had thought initially of using a santur instead of a cimbalom, but the santur lacks the range and the dynamic capability to be used with a string chamber orchestra. The cimbalom doesn't need to be a concert grand model; in fact it doesn't even need to have dampers.The Omani was something of an afterthought: a musician friend of mine had worked in Oman and commented on how authentically Omani the Basse Danse sounded. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.
