To match the topic and brevity of the poem, the work itself isn’t long, lasting only one-and-a-half minutes. The accompaniment delicately yet persistently ticks away, slightly ahead of a second to emphasize the perception of time quickly passing by. The word “short†is always given an eighth duration followed by a rest in the chorus so that a quasi-staccato articulation is perceived with each occurrence. With its sensitive text setting, interesting harmonic palette, and atypical accompaniment, this work makes for unique concert programming. This work may be performed in conjunction with Look back on Time with kindly Eyes (43) to create a multi-movement setting titled Two Dickinson Poems on Time. Duration: 1:30.

Published by C8 Music (A0.924069). A Glenn Miller classic, depicting a train ride from New York to Chattanooga, Tennessee, passing through Baltimore and North Carolina. It starts with the old steam train slowly pulling out of the station, then rattling along with one of the great big band tunes. This arrangement includes optional train whistles and cabasa, played by the singers to enhance the railway experience. It ends with two cheeky chords for the final whistle, Whoo Whoo. It's suitable for any SSAATB choir and I have also done it with individual pro singers. The tenor part is low enough to be sung by baritones. Older audiences remember the tune. Each verse is progressively based upon an overall narrative: 1. hopes of the parent for the child 2. an easy, natural rhythm to family life, possibly the child is older now, and there is a dream of family continuance 3. uncertainty over who is nurturing who: does the child now sing to comfort the parent? 4. a closing blessing for peace and rest that hearkens back to the successful sleep of a tired infant III. The first verse is given to a soloist (possibly offstage) before the first sopranos enter with the second verse accompanied by cloud-like harmonies provided by the second sopranos and altos. The third verse is set for the tenors with further building of sound leading to a more traditional setting for the final verses. The last verse includes a new descant for the sopranos.This arrangement is suitable for a moderate to advanced level choir, and the audience or congregation can join in with the last verse. The piece has been performed at services in Wisconsin. It also makes a good concert selection for any liberal religious school choir, or any secular group that wishes to acknowledge the roots of choral music in liturgical traditions, while keeping a non-denominational stance.
