John Mason Neale, the writer of the text is best known for the hymns Good Christian Men, Rejoice, the carol Good King Wenceslas and the advent hymn O come, O come, Emmanuel. This attractive light arrangement uses divisi sopranos at one point and also includes an a cappella section. It’s a tuneful arrangement, easy on the ear and not especially difficult. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are My Song is Love Unknown (Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142). In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.†The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). A setting of the ancient Epiphany hymn Illuminans Altissime by St. Ambrose of Milan, From the collection, Five Ambrosian Hymns. Suitable for schools, churches, or for modern performance choirs, this music is based on the hymn written in the 4th Century by St. Ambrose of Milan. The original tune most likely sounded like what we would consider to be chant, but in a style that was specific to Ambrose, and came to be known as Milanese or Ambrosian in style. This is a meditative reflection of our own journey as we follow our own paths toward enlightenment. In recasting the hymn as a performance work I wanted to portray both the figurative and literal aspects of the imagery of light by using regular rhythmic patterns within accompaniment voices. In this way I hoped to illustrate the regular pattern of prayer that could lead individuals to Christ’s illumination. There are also important moments with harmonies that feature seconds, resulting in soft, almost clashing pitches that twinkle or shimmer like stars in the sky. .

Thus, Lo, a Rose, allows a choir to demonstrate artistic merit without enduring exhaustive preparations. The setting is meant to portray that the light and salvation brought to us by the Rose was achieved via a bitter and sorrowful path.

The creation of 'Canadian Streams' was inspired by two important milestones – the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation and the 60th anniversary of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Canada. For this initiative, the composer has chosen a poem written by the father of Canadian poetry, Charles G. D. Roberts. The text portrays the countless spectacular Canadian rivers that were the “witnesses†and “storytellers†of the great, beautiful, and welcoming country’s rich history.About the ComposerVahram Sarkissian is an Armenian-Canadian composer, conductor, and singer currently residing in Montreal, Canada. His writing style represents a musical palette ranging from influences by V century Armenian medieval chant to previously unreported endogenous vocal extended techniques. Sarkissian's music has been performed in dozens of countries including the UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, and the USA. His arrangement of an Armenian ancient chant Great Mystery has been included in the Oxford University Press anthology World Carols for Choirs and has been recorded by the BBC Singers. Sarkissian's instrumental work Hunting the Hunter was premiered under his baton at Carnegie Hall in 2012. His composition Joyful Light for choir has been performed more than a hundred times around the world.Vahram Sarkissian is also active as a lecturer. His workshops and presentations on extended vocal techniques are frequently featured at the most prestigious choral festivals and symposia around the world.
