Originally written for the Commonwealth Games, the message of unity and support is hugely relevant to choirs, and the strong melodies will rapidly become lodged in singers' brains. There is an epic quality to the song, and this is brought out in this arrangement, as it builds to a momentous key-change. After the fireworks and bombast, everything boils down to a simple statement of the key phrase from the song - Together we are one. Thanks, John. Laughter in the Rain is a song composed and recorded by Neil Sedaka, with lyrics by Phil Cody. It includes a 20-second saxophone solo by Jim Horn. The opening chord of the chorus was based on that used by John in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which Sedaka has described as a drop-dead chord. He combined that with a pentatonic melody inspired by Aaron Copland. Cody claims to have written the lyrics in about five minutes after smoking marijuana and falling asleep under a tree for a couple of hours.

The more I compose, and the more I teach composition, the more I think about memory. After all, to write engaging music, the composer has to rely on the memory of their audience. Whether it is the memory of an earlier theme, an expectation that is met in an unexpected way, or writing in a style reminiscent of times past, we rely on the audience to cover the rift. Fittingly, Mnemosyne, by the American poet Trumbull Stickney (1874-1904), is named after the Greek goddess of memory and the mother of the nine Muses. Stickney tells a story of remembrance and nostalgia, relying on our own memories and supplying us with more, with the refrain of the country we remember.

Published by David Baldwin (A0.1319175). Eventide is powerfully narrative in style: a yearning and intimate prayer that our Shepherd would be near in the night (symbolic of difficult times). The piece uses M.L. Hofford's lyrics, which he penned in response to the human cost of war. On a personal level, Hofford's lyrics struck me as especially comforting after an unusually sobering death in the community. The verses are decidedly minimalist and have a chant-like beauty to them, so as to emphasize pondering. The refrains fill out in texture (up to 7 parts) as the prayer shifts to beckoning.1. Abide with me; 'tis eventide. The day is past and gone; the shadows of the evening fall; the night is coming on. Within my home a welcome guest, within my home abide.2. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. Thy walk today with me has made my heart within me burn as I communed with thee. Thy earnest words have filled my soul and kept me near thy side.3. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. And lone will be the night if I cannot commune with thee, nor find in thee my light. The darkness of this world, I fear, would in my home abide.Refrain: O Savior, stay this night with me; behold, 'tis eventide. Amen.

For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment. Â The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies. Â

The word Dúlamán means seaweed and the song references two types, one for dyeing and one that is edible. These two types of seaweed also represent two different characters in the song.
