A polka is a vivacious couple dance of Bohemian origin in duple time; was a basic pattern of hop-step-close-step; a lively Bohemian dance tune in 2/4 time. The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia).Growing up in Pennsylvania, nd playing for various local community bands, VFW bands ,Lion's Band , etc we played the Pa Polka for many functions, churches, Seniors, Cake Walks, 4th of July programs, summer and spring concerts, marching bands, parades, and many more events.The Pennsylvania Polka is such a fun, happy song, in a march tempo beat. This exciting, upbeat bossa nova features a great melody set atop energizing stop-time rhythmic figures provided by the band. The Portuguese lyric is sung in unison by women, then joined by the men in prime unison. The flowing, harmonized bridge sets the bossa nova in motion, with beautiful voice leading typical of the style during the two-part passages. Following a two bar drum solo, the stop-time melody changes to an English lyric. A modulatory interlude leads to a vocal scat solo with punchy vocal group background figures. The instrumental vamp returns, setting up a big conclusion! Taking inspiration from the original and several other different covers of this song, I've written out what is probably one of my favorite arrangements I've written. It's sure to challenge your performers and keep your audience engaged from start to finish!It starts with a soft drone in the Basses that continuously adds chord tones and volume to build sonic intensity and set the tone right out of the gate! We then move on to a slowed down first verse with the melody supported only by chords in the choir. Vocal Percussion leads us into a tempo change and explosive snippet of the melody before the piece hits its stride. Lots of upbeats, syncopations, and altered melodic tones throughout adds a high level of difficulty to this piece. As we get to the end of this piece, the ensemble will suddenly alter time to a half time feel that not only adds to excitement but also helps to bring the piece to a dramatic closing.This is written for Solo voice and SSAATTBB choir and a Vocal Percussionist.As with most of my arrangements I leave many of the syllables blank to encourage the director/performers to put their own spin on the arrangement with their own choice of syllables! Suggested syllables in certain spots and all necessary melodic lyrics have all been included for you!I hope that you and your group enjoys my arrangement! Musically, this is inspired by the ancient church tradition, using voices pitched a perfect fifth apart from one another and moving in parallel. Here, perfect fifths are stacked: Sopranos and Altos a perfect fifth apart and Tenors and Basses likewise, but often with different tonal centres. This creates occasional dissonance, but the tonality is clear throughout. Meanwhile, the rhythms evoke an irregular dance-like celebratory atmosphere.
