My musical adolescence was spent singing music of the African and African American traditions with Essence of Joy. This piece, written for them in 2015, was inspired by those experiences and integrates spirituals that had special significance to me during my time in EOJ. There are quotations from Over My Head; Bye and Bye; My Lord, What a Morning; Great Day; and Oh, Freedom. During the climax of the piece, these spirituals combine into a moving tapestry of half-forgotten songs. Stewart (A0.1505628). “Farewell to Tarwathie” is probably best known from Judy Collins’ recording of 1970 that was accompanied by the songs of Humpback whales; but it started first with a poem written by the Scottish poet-peasant George Scroggie, published in 1857. His poem was accompanied by the traditional 18th century Scottish air “Kennet’s Dream”. Thus, the marriage of Scroggie’s words to a well-known Scottish fiddle tune gives us the “Farewell to Tarwathie” as we know it today. It is a song about a young sailor saying good-bye to family and friends as he heads out to sea to find riches in hunting the whale. This arrangement is scored for a traditional choral mixed ensemble with divisi [SMATTBB] (at times) and a bass-baritone solo, to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 5:30+-.

Zati bat in Basque means » one part».The original work, AMETSETAN (the long version) was commissioned by the CORK INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL for the 38th Seminar on Contemporary Choral Music. First performance, Cork, Ireland, 2 May 2003.Its intention is to recreate the atmosphere of the open-air festivity in an Irish small village during its festival day, from the point of view of a Basque musician who never visited that country and only knows its music.The work has four different parts: 1- In the first one, people are invited to join the festival. 2- In the second one, women sing the Ave Maria during the religious celebration. 3- Dancing makes the people happy and it is an excuse to meet. 4- In the last part, when the feast comes to an end nobody wants to say goodbye.The composition’s closing text has been written by JOSUNE LÓPEZ, a component in my choir, Kanta Cantemus Korua. Miss López has tried to transmit all her love and admiration towards Ireland.* The lyrics are in Basque language. Spanish and English translation of the text is included for those who hardly recognize Basque language. My favorite aspect of Carl Sandburg's poetry is that he captures profound thoughts with simple language and direct language. It is a composer's dream. We spend our whole lives chasing our dreams, only to one day let go and say goodbye. Similarly, the piece spends two minutes gathering stars, songs, and faces, gaining momentum...until everything fades again into a beautiful background of stars. Thank you to the 2009 PMEA Region V Choir and Dr. Christopher Kiver for this beautiful performance.

Thanks, John. Laughter in the Rain is a song composed and recorded by Neil Sedaka, with lyrics by Phil Cody. It includes a 20-second saxophone solo by Jim Horn. The opening chord of the chorus was based on that used by John in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which Sedaka has described as a drop-dead chord. He combined that with a pentatonic melody inspired by Aaron Copland. Cody claims to have written the lyrics in about five minutes after smoking marijuana and falling asleep under a tree for a couple of hours.
