Program note.The greatest challenge of the Stabat Mater text is to figure out how to set twenty stanzas of pain and suffering without making it all sound too depressing. So, before I began composing, I looked at a number of scores and recordings of Stabat Mater by various composers: DesPrez, Palestrina, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Vivaldi, Haydn, Dvorak, Rossini, Poulenc, Szymanowski, Penderecki, et al. It was fascinating to see what each composer did with regard to text setting: the variety of musical textures from movement to movement, different approaches to the use of fast or allegro music to offset the mood of the text, solo versus choral sections, etc. Each composer took a very personal and creative approach to the task. It was a fascinating study! After weeks of listening and scrutinizing, I decided to divide the twenty-stanza text into six sections. This song was composed by Nahum Situmorang (1908 - 1969). He is a composer and musician. In his entire life, Nahum never worked as an employee of the Dutch colonial government. During his youth, he had won many song competitions, including Sumatra Keroncong Concours in Medan (1936). Nahum's skill in creating his own songs as well as singing them made many people admire him. Nahum is able to play a variety of musical instruments and has his own band. Nahum also often creates songs when in the middle of a crowd. Nahum was most prolific in composing songs from 1950 to 1960. Historically, Nahum has never married in his entire life. However, from several sources, Nahum stated that he once loved a woman but he did not reveal it. This song tells about the romantic story of a man who seduces the woman he loves. He fell in love at the first sight and tried to find out about the woman's family. This song is a collection of rhymes called Umpasa in Batak language. The lyrics of this song are closely related to the culture of the Batak tribe, especially about the family tree known as Tarombo. Men and women are not allowed to marry if both are of them are from the same descendant ( one surname / one family tree). Based on this culture, the song Da Natinitip Sanggar shows a man's curiosity about a woman's surname and her biological mother's surname to find out whether they came from the same family tree because if a woman's family name is the same as the man's biological mother's name, it is considered a mate. Otniel Simangunsong is a conductor and composer from Indonesia. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Written in December of 2020 for Be near me when my light is low, a collaborative Requiem by the composers of Inversion Ensemble (a conductor-composer collaborative based in Austin, Texas), the Offertory movement text is a modern English rendition of the Offertory (“Domine Jesu Christe†and “Hostias et preces tibi, Domineâ€) from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. The Offertory is introduced by a light, flowing sixteenth note pattern in the righthand of the piano that is rhythmically repetitive and meditative. The voices then appear in unison at first, gradually beginning to divide into harmony as the piece progresses until at the word death they fall back into a stark, unaccompanied unison. The Archangel Michael appears in the section that follows, leading the souls of the faithful to eternal light as the music crescendos and moves through an accelerando, ending on a triumphant C major chord on the final repetition of eternal light. A motive of assurance that this light is promised to the faithful for all eternity is presented in E-flat major, a motive that will reappear in the finale of the piece. The flowing sixteenth notes and harmonic shifts of the first section return at Sacrifices and praises we offer you, O Lord. The movement concludes with a fugue in the victorious key of C major, once again offering comfort to Christ's faithful ones through the assurance of heavenly light for all eternity.

Amiruddin Tjitraprawira, a figure who hails from Bangkalan Madura, is not widely known in his current condition. He was born on May 18, 1920 and died on December 17, 1975. A number of songs created by R. Amiruddin Tjitraprawira, circulated a lot like the song; Pangèran Trunodjojo, Madhurâ O Madhurâ, Asta Aermata, Kerrabhân Sape, Djoko Tole, Tera' Bulân, È Pasèsèr, Kè' Lèsap, Kembhângnga Naghârâ, Tondu' Majâng, Aèng Tantja 'Torowan, Orèng Matrol and others. This song is a regional Madurese song because it really describes the lives of the coastal communities of Madura who work as fishermen. The song Tondu' Majâng tells the life of a Madurese fisherman. Their life is described as very hard because they have to deal with many dangers at sea (atemmo bhâbhâjâ). They also have to risk their lives (abhândhâ nyabâ) to support their families who are left at home. Sometimes to catch a lot of fish they have to stay for days on the boat so they become used to the sea and rely on the waves as a pillow and the wind as their blanket (abhântal ombâ' sapo' angèn salanjhânga). Many write this song from Madura with Tanduk Majeng, even though the word tanduk or tandu' means horn in Indonesian. Meanwhile, when paired with the context and lyrics of this song, it is true that there is tondu' which means arrived. So it is appropriate to use tondu' instead of horns because what is told in this song is the arrival of the fishermen when they are looking for fish. Otniel Simangunsong is a conductor and composer from Indonesia. He was born in Tanjungbalai, North Sumatra on August 19, 1996. Currently he is a conductor of Benedicamus Chante Choir - Darma Cendika Catholic University Student Choir, Surabaya. Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1091873). Erik Satie's Sarabande No. 1 is one of my favourite piano pieces. For a long time, I felt there was an a cappella choral piece hiding within it, in plain sight. One day I got inspired and gave it a try. Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year. Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted. As dawn breaks was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. As dawn breaks works perfectly as the opening number of this suite. Finally, my instruction to choirs is to sing as if in a painting, and indeed I invite any artists who might draw inspiration from this piece to consider creating a companion work of art to accompany it.
