Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Who We Love by Sam Smith is a moving ballad that has beautiful harmonic integrity. This arrangement is for average- to larger-sized SATB a cappella groups, and sits at a intermediate-advanced difficulty for high school/collegiate groups. This arrangement is similarly for the a cappella group looking to explore cluster chords while fulfilling a slow, but moving ballad slot for your song set. While there isn’t a vocal percussionist part in the score, there is a slight amount of body percussion involved in the second verse, which can be replaced by a vocal percussionist if desired.This arrangement features incredible harmonies, including many cluster chords that sound full and rich; these cluster chords are often met with two- and occasionally three-part splits within each voice part, which makes it crucial for each part to be solid. If your group does not have enough members to satisfy the three-part splits, one of the notes can be omitted for a similar sounding product. Additionally, there are two solo opportunities featured, each with the exact same range. If only one solo is desired, the soloist can simply follow the melody. The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia).Growing up in Pennsylvania, nd playing for various local community bands, VFW bands ,Lion's Band , etc we played the Pa Polka for many functions, churches, Seniors, Cake Walks, 4th of July programs, summer and spring concerts, marching bands, parades, and many more events.The Pennsylvania Polka is such a fun, happy song, in a march tempo beat. The choir is forte by measure 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. It is suggested that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses (Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow) in completing this movement. This double choir a cappella arrangement of Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem KV626 is faithful but challenging. Soprano's are required to reach top b's for this arrangement to work well. Translation:Full of tears will be that dayWhen from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged;Therefore spare him, O God,Merciful Lord Jesus,Grant them eternal rest. So occasionally, I set myself assignments of a sort, which is how this song cycle Spectrum came to be. I set myself the task of interpreting the colours of the rainbow pride flag. Because I am so gay. The cycle is not actually LGBTQIA+ themed in its subject matter as such, the flag was just a kind of framework for my creativity.In thje intervening years since the cycle was first conceived, the LGBTQIA+ community has embraced a new flag, the Progress Pride FLag, which will give me a few more colours to interpret and add to the original cycle.Thie song Yellow Rain is a setting of a joyous poem by Monique Duval about getting caught in a sun shower on the beach.

One More Arrow originally featured as the closing song of 1983's album Too Low For Zero.It's a perfect song to include in a programme on the subject of life and remembrance. Bernie Taupin's beautiful lyrics present an elegy for a departed friend or father figure who now lies in the soft brown earth that holds him, forever always young. The lyrics drew from Elton John one of his most gorgeous melodies and I have kept much of the harmony intact in this arrangement, although the second verse gets a bit more ambitious. In addition, the melody is shared out between the various vocal parts, meaning that the basses don't have to spend the entire performance going doo doo!Scored for Soprano solo, SATB á capella, this moderately difficult arrangement involves frequent splits in the Soprano and Bass parts, occasional splits in the alto and none at all in the tenor! In my arrangements, I like to go one step beyond simply presenting the original song for choir, so in the second verse there's the gentlest of subtle nods to Paul Simon's The Boxer at the mention of he could have been a boxer and the lyric knocked me down provides an opportunity for a choral cascade from top to bottom. And just before the final chorus, the choir's vocal lines represent the trajectory of an arrow, shooting up to a top F in the soprano solo part before descending into the new key of B flat major for the closing section.For medium to advanced chamber choirs.

This piece was originally derived from a prayer that echoed in my head the night of the terrorist attacks on Paris, France in November 2015. It's former subtitle, in parenthesis, for the victims of Paris stayed for a long time leading up to it's premiere in April. Gradually, I came to realize that it wasn't just meant to be a prayer for Paris alone, but for all families, friends, and anyone who has ever, in their life, experienced such tremendous loss. It is not my intention to impose any one idea or belief on anyone, but simply to provide some level of comfort and hope to both performer and listener alike in times of fear and uncertainty. Whether you are a professional group, university choir, church choir, or community ensemble, that you find solace in Threnody.

The Door weaves a story of someone who feels stuck - they'd like to make a change in their life but it's easier to stay inside their comfort zone, far away from the fear monster that guards the door. Eventually they decide to stand and go through the door, but they find themselves unable to vanquish the fear monster. They realize that the only way through is by accepting their fear! The moral of the story is that true courage isn't the absence of fear - it's being scared out of your mind and making the tough decision anyway. I wrote this piece in collaboration with the Wentzville Liberty Chamber Choir - the students came up with the idea for the piece and contributed lyric and musical ideas. They wanted a roller coaster of a piece, and I did my best to deliver.

The inspiration for my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) was Fauré's Requiem in which he ignored the fire and brimstone text of the Dies irae and Tuba mirum in the Sequence of the Requiem Mass. And consequently he created a work that is peaceful, tranquil and uplifting. I'd like to think of death in that way.So, I proceeded by taking the exact text that Fauré used in his work, and instead of a large chorus and full orchestra I decided to do a chamber version. It is scored for SATB (single voices), flute, clarinet, string quartet, double bass and harp.The movements, as in the Fauré, are:1. Introit and Requiem2. Offertory3. Santus 4. Pie Jesu5. Agnus Dei6. Libera me7.
