PLANET ORIGAMI : Is my latest play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of family orientated musicals and takes the audience ‘Out of this World’ to a strange little planet in a far distant galaxy on a small barren rocky planet called BEEZEDON. This is a place entirely inhabited by a race of androids, who after some catastrophic event, were the only machines immune from the ensuing radiation which destroyed every living life form and fauna. Before leaving for a safer haven, the emigrating intelligencia built a new colony of these ‘droids and programmed them to make their planet beautiful again by carpeting it with new flowers, when it was deemed ‘safe.’ The droids had carried out this programme diligently for the next thousand years. However no one had thought through the consequence of instigating such a rigid programme and when their preliminary attempts ended in failure and the fauna died,these clever machines found a perfect solution by refering to their data banks and manufacturing replicas from synthesised plastic. Once the programme was completed and with no more space left, the ‘droids instantly ‘restored' themselves and began creating their world all over again. This is where my story begins:- ‘Melody Mayflower’, Is a newly appointed Earth’s Ambassador and a representative of the Commission for Harmony and Concilliation, an organisation which has been extending its borders throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Our own star system has become a recent member and Melody is one of their many Goodwill Ambassadors. Although she doesn’t know it, she has been selected for the onerous task of convincing the Droid Nation that their programme is now obselete, as Beezedon is now free of contamination, therefore ready for re-planting with organic material.

On atree stump Barny the barn owl wakes from his slumbers, winks, blinks and toowit-toowoos.Woody the little fir tree is feeling very sorry for himself, bemoaning the fact that all ofhis leafy friends have been taken by the townspeople for their Christmas festivities andeven the late arrival of Jack Frost, a most exuberant character, finds it difficult to lift ourlittle friend’s spirit with his cheerful banter. And so our fir tree resigns himself to make the best of Christmas Eve as allthe forest creatures hurry off home to prepare for the coming celebrations. However,things take a sudden turn when he overhears the fox and weasel devising a cunning planto make a pile of money, by going into the ‘Wholesale Toy Business’. Of course when others hear about the plan, Woody becomes nominated tosave Christmas and sets out on his adventure, with a little help from the Christmas Fairy,Snowy White the snowman and Gordon the Garden Gnome, along with other forestfriends. Taking inspiration from the original and several other different covers of this song, I've written out what is probably one of my favorite arrangements I've written. It's sure to challenge your performers and keep your audience engaged from start to finish!It starts with a soft drone in the Basses that continuously adds chord tones and volume to build sonic intensity and set the tone right out of the gate! We then move on to a slowed down first verse with the melody supported only by chords in the choir. Vocal Percussion leads us into a tempo change and explosive snippet of the melody before the piece hits its stride. Lots of upbeats, syncopations, and altered melodic tones throughout adds a high level of difficulty to this piece. As we get to the end of this piece, the ensemble will suddenly alter time to a half time feel that not only adds to excitement but also helps to bring the piece to a dramatic closing.This is written for Solo voice and SSAATTBB choir and a Vocal Percussionist.As with most of my arrangements I leave many of the syllables blank to encourage the director/performers to put their own spin on the arrangement with their own choice of syllables! Suggested syllables in certain spots and all necessary melodic lyrics have all been included for you!I hope that you and your group enjoys my arrangement! I wrote this piece in 2018 to mark the 50th anniversaryof the Toronto Chamber Choir, a fine early music choir I have sung with since 1998.Using the  opening of the well-known Gregorian chant Gaudeamus omnes (and changingthe text to let us rejoice in music, Gaudeamus is a five- minute musical history tourthrough the various time periods the TCC sings. It begins with plainchant, then two-voiceorganum of the 11th-century Notre Dame school of Leonin and Perotin, followed bythree-voice hocket of a slightly later period. Then a nod to the 15th-century Dufay motetNuper rosarum flores (which the TCC has performed.) Next comes some 16th-centuryTudor music -- Byrd, say -- including some false relations and a typical English cadence.Then comes an allusion to Purcell, specifically the pleasing dissonance of the “voice of theTurtle†from My Beloved Spake. Then comes a little Bach-like fugue (or fughetta) based onthe Gaudeamus motif. Since the TCC rarely performs Classic/Romantic repertoire, wejump immediately to a jazzy ending in compound meter -- imagine Byrd meets Brubeck,based on one of my own earlier pieces for solo piano, but with elements of the Gaudeamusmelody. And all that in five minutes. Phew!
