An Open World, When I Land and And the Wind are three settings of poems from Fletcher LaVallee Bartholomew's collection entitled And the Wind: Gnostic Poems 1945 - 1979. When I Land is duration ca. 5 minutes. Minneapolis native Fletcher Bartholomew spent most of his life in aviation, beginning with a childhood flight in a Curtis Robin in 1929. His work in aviation started with a job as an inspector in an aircraft factory. He went on to become a test pilot in World War II, serving at the South India Air Depot at Bangalore, India. He often spoke later of his experience on the ship to India and the people he met travelling around the subcontinent. He subsequently worked in aviation in Munich, Germany, and in Lima, Peru, before he concluded his career working in airport planning and management. For S.A.T.B. choir with piano accompaniment. This is a very beautiful, harmonically rich and flowing work with the text adapted from Ecclesiastes 3. There are a few passages when parts divide. Vocal parts are all within normal ranges. Level of difficulty is moderate/advanced with lots of movement in the vocal parts and some close hamonies. It works well for advanced high school groups, church choirs, university choirs. There is also available a S.A.B. arrangement for more advanced and smaller ensembles here on SMPPress.com. Published by TALLULAH TUNES (A0.933412). 2016 Choral Contest Entry - In late 2014, Dan Korneychuk, music director at the Bel Air Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, asked me to score one of his favorite poems which was written by Samuel Grossman in 1664. It had been put to music unsuccessfully, some felt, several times in the past. I decided to write a ‘hymn version’ first, much as it would appear in a traditional hymnal. Unfortunately, the text traversed the extremes of emotion in the telling of Christ’s passion rendering the melody inappropriate in places. I decided to keep to the hymn version as much as possible, but when the emotional story differed from the musical one, I used harmonic variation and dissonance, utilizing the wide palette of the orchestra to tell the story. This piece has been performed on Palm Sunday. Versions exist in the form of a hymn, an arrangement for 10 brass and 2 percussion, an arrangement for SATB/piano, An arrangement for SATB/organ, and an arrangement for orchestra.Questions or comments?
